If your DA 50 is new dont break it in on a 23x8. Break that thing on a 22x8 and the RPM's will be better. After you run like 5 gallons through it switch on over to the larger prop.
DA told me it was fine to break in on a 23x8 Mejzelik (I needed a bigger, CF prop to balance). They just said no extended verticals and no extended hovering for a while - "It'll do it, it's just hard on the engine" was what they told me exactly.

The 23x8 should be ok for break in. With the engine on my Ultimate I used a 22x8 bolly ($34 "from memory" from howie) I did change to a 23x8 bolly after break in and it liked it alot. But I busted it after a nose over on landing. I've gone back to a 22x8 bolly which seems better suited to 3d flying (spools up faster). Try not to hover for the first few flights but after a few flight you can but keep them short. I didn't hover for more than a few seconds until about the 5th litre of fuel. Also if you are flying IMAc or pattern type stuff use different throttle setting (not just on and off) use the midrange as well to help bed the ring.

If you haven't already tune for max rpm on the high needle and back off 200-300 rpm, then set the low end for good tranistion. Once you do that you should be close. As you run more fuel through just tweek booth needle slowly until the midrange burble is gone. Then you should be sweet and have a very reliable engine.. Love me DA....

you flew for 6 mins and it ran out of fuel, you must be running real rich or you have a hell of a small tank.

Sorry to hear of your iccedent. Hope the plane is ok..

I started at the factory settings, ie. What the manual says for both needles. Started the engine let it warm up at a high idle for about 2min. Open the throttle and put the tacho on it. check the reading and shut the motor down. Wind the high needle in an 1/8th of a turn and re-check rpms. Do this until the rpms peak and then back of 200-300 rpms. Next is the low needle. once the high end is set start the engine and let it idle for 30 sec. Then quickly open the throttle. If the motor sags it is lean and you need to open the low needle. If it coughs or burbles it is rich and you need to close the low end. Alway adjust the needle in small increments. The factory low setting should be close. All you are looking for to start with is a smooth transition. If it doesn't sag or cough leave it. Go fly the model and at these setting the motor should have a slight burble in the midrange. This is good for break in. You don't want to go to lean. fly 5-10 flights on the intial settings then every 2nd to 3rd flight after that tweak the both needles 1/16th of a turn. Be sure to check the transition before flying. The midrange burble should slowy disappear and the engine should begin to feel stronger. Once the burble is gone recheck the rpms and peak the high needle for max rpms and lean the low end until it motor sags on transition. Then richen the low end until it transitions smotthly again. Then go fly until you have burned at least 10 litres of fuel (it took me about 10L of fuel just to tune out the burble) then switch to synthetic oil retune as previously discribed and go fly.

I am running a 20oz tank in the ultimate and get about 20min of flight time set a timer for ten min land and check the fuel load and work out from there how long you could fly for. Personally I fly for 10min as that is when I start to loose concerntration.

Well i had a interresting day went to feild today did what u said rusty all seamed good went up did a circut then the engine stoped no reason had a scary landing the expo on my radio was way out on elevator neally stalled it just got on the ground phew no damage .
looked for why it stoped took off the relay for ingition tryied to start then what the heck idal at 4000rpm cant drop turned battery off . looked at throttle servo i put in butter place started again same thing then it would just cut out pulled choak it fired again the terned of choak it fired normal idal strange then whent to rev it just cut out hmm then i notice some bubbles in fuel line so i got the fuel pump and tried to pump fuel out bingo found the problem the line and clunk had come off in the tank fixed and put back started all good it purred nice again and transition good . Thanks Rusty your advice was dead on .
Put cowl on and restarted took off and landed 3 times its got some power unlimited vertical plane weighs 8kg after mod to firewall it was really nice to fly .
plus with the muffler cut i notice no noise change .
