I would have thought the 75 would be to heavy. I have read that they have flown the WH extra/edges at 22lbs. Is that true? The 75 would be a tonne of grunt.

You'd most likely be happier flying the larger 33% Extra 260 with that monster 75cc engine...the same servos, batteries, etc. go into the 33% plane, only difference is the motor and the size of the plane. Still one servo per aileron and one per elevator, some even say one JR DS8611A is plenty for the rudder...
Good luck, have a great flying season!

I am building the Extra Special and so far it's been a great experience. My problem/question is the amount of control throw for elevator..it states 12* which is about 1 1/8" from center. This looks to be not much throw at all. Can someone confirm this being a good place to start for low rates..?

plenty for low rates
plenty for low rates
I show people the throws for low rate and most people that have never set up a plane with airfoiled tail surfaces can't believe how little the control surfaces move for how much maneuverability I have in the air.
Good luck flying and enjoy!

Thanks FlyinTiger..I really appreciate the info. Right now the lows for elevator are right at 12-13* ..its about 1 1/8"..high rates are 3.5". How much expo do I need if any on low rates..I have 50% set on high rates. I have not set up a gasser for 3D before but have flown a lot of 1/4 scale stuff in the past such as Giles 200 and Ohio Super Stars and Extra 260's but that was long before any plane was built with such large and deep beveled control surfaces. I don't plan to launch into any 3d stuff for a few flights and I know I can handle the plane alright as I have lots of 3d flying on smaller stuff. I will be setting c/g in the middle of the numbers BTW.

Depending on where you put your CG, you may end up dialing down the elevator...if you pull full elevator on low rates and it corkscrews instead of looping you have too much elevator!

I have 1 more question...in the past we used switches the would ground the plug to the engine case as a safety switch..I have the throttle set up to totally close the carb to kill it..is the saftey switch still used today..I don't remember anyone talking about using that anymore.

I had that same motor as you did on this plane! The cheapo chinese motor. Later it was home to my FPE 3.2 before I sold it. Should have kept that airframe but oh well. The new 28% Extra is going to be cool so.

Looks good srm99. I like the pin stripe idea, very clever.... The DA looks right at home one the enging box. But why are you using the standard muffler?? Yeah they give a little more power but you would have to kill the cowling to fit around it. I ordered the 50 and canister setup for mine today. Can't wait to set it up. One question though. Will I need a header that has some drop in it or will a straight wrap around header work????

i was told there was more power than the canister and the only way was with the tune pipe which was the length off a baseball bat i can get that muffler in by putting it on after cowl is on .
plus it was $200 cheaper

i agree but at the moment my cowl was cut for the other motor and has a large opening near muffler if it drives me up the wall i get the pits muffler and a new cowl .

Looks great. Plus when you fly who cares if you have the standard muffler. Sometimes you have to end up hacking the motor box on planes to get a pitts muffler on there.

Well i started the da 50r this afternoon made a mistake i choke it and fliped fliped fliped x 10 times no fire then i relised i had the servo electronic switch off silly me then turned on but now i had floded it . turned the choke off and throttle down and fliped x 10 times .
then bang she fired . a little adjustment of the trottle and all good she purrrres nice \\
only thing i did notice is to wait until warmed up to transition to full trottle as it burbles a bit but when she warm its all good .
was able to get 6500rpm on a nx 23x8 prop .
very happy with new motor i just finnished cutting the cowl to fit .
no photos untill tomorrow as i am bugged and sore from flodding motor i wont forget that for A LONG TIME

If your DA 50 is new dont break it in on a 23x8. Break that thing on a 22x8 and the RPM's will be better. After you run like 5 gallons through it switch on over to the larger prop.
