Twinman took up the dare to build and fly a five engine B-17.
A week ago he sent me a picture of a five engine B-17. I thought he might have had a nightmare or a bout of twinsanity but he was serious. So, of course, I dared him to build and fly one and he did just that.
You can see the full report with pictures and video at www.rcwarbirds.com
Warning, twinsanity is catching, view with caution!

Now how are you going to explain the aggressive twinsanity that spawned the flight that will be happening tomorrow morning???
I would like to see the documention that validates this particular craft.
That aside I will be there to witness the maiden expierence and possibly bring a still camera.
BTW see I told you that I was not meaning YOU when I said that I had not seen a crash in a while as you were starting the P-38 for the second flight of the day. I was glad to see that the bird returned to earth in one piece, even if a part or two were in a little different orientation.
Yes I did have to reorient parts on my bird as well today, so I guess we are even.

Five engine B-17? Yep there was such a critter. I was assigned to Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards AFB 1955 -1959 and a B-17 was used to flight test various engines including Turbo-Props for Allison and GE. One installation the prop was so big it just cleared the ground when acft was level. You might be able to Google and find more info.

Check out these two sites....liberty foundation.org for the Liberty Belle which was at one time a test bed and has been restored to stock configuration. www.warbirdregistry.org/b17registry the last one has a couple of photos. Don't be too sure there wasn't a B-17 on floats, they did a lot of crazy stuff in the forties. How about a P-39 with carrier arresting gear or a P-51 with a tail hook???

Twinman...I have a new double dare for you.....laughs insidiously. Put your 5 engine B-17 on floats
Btw...yes there was a 5 engine B-17 and it has been well documented. The cockpit had to be moved aftward 4 feet to make room for the turboprop engine in the nose running a 4-blade huge propeller. That one engine could power the plane alone. The standard 4 engines were there obviously as a safety margin.

I already knew you were aware of the 5 engine B-17 through your emails.I was replying to Terror Dactyl since he asked for proof that the plane existed.

OK
I was just making sure Twinman knew who I was replying to and didn't think I had forgotten the corespondances we had passed back and forth regarding the 5 engine plane.

Hmmm ok....we'll let you slide this time. Is that the Fork Tail Devil kit your talking about(the profile P-38). I dont remember the manufacturer, but the LHS has(or had) one that one the box...it said fly the forked tail devil.
E-flite makes really light floats for use with their Electric Piper cub. Maybe those would work. Here is link...my LHS has a set on the shelf right now.

If its not floats thats the problem, but lack of power, well....if your running glow motors, I dont know what to tell you unless you want to increase the motor size.....or maybe try different props.
