Did final setup and ran engine in shop today, high rpm 82500, low 1600. Was harder to get gas pumped up to get wet engine for starting than on stand, maybe a little lean on low end ? The engine only has 1.5 hours run time. It was very windy 20 to 30 north wind, if wind goes down will go flying tomorrow.

on the funtana it really should be an 18x6
Each engine before leaving is run for some time and checked for rpm. All of them run between 8400 and 8500.
Something is not quite right with the needles I'm sure...
Give me a call if you need to!

Scooterpilot,
I had stock hinges pull out on my Funtana X 100, so will consider changing mine as well. What is the number of the Dubro hinge you are using?
Thanks,
Damon

But they all will increase to 8750 rpm, right?

Did you adjust the needle settings? When it was run here it was very humid and 50 degrees. What is your altitude?
Just ran the Mejzlik 18x6 on a new engine with 17 minutes running time....turned 9090 rpm for peoples reference on props. Its about 65 out today...180 Ft ASL.

Todd,
As you know, the Mejzlik 18X6 is much less load compared to a Vess or APC 18X6.
I checked other forums and found the Vess 18X6 has the same static rpm as the APC 18X6W, +/- 50 rpm.
Why not run the engine on the Vess as in your manual and see if you are getting close to the 8750 rpm.

On a Vess 18x6 when the engine is new you will see 8400 rpm +/- 50 rpm. Same as an APC 18x6 wide.
The APC weighs quite a bit more..
I just posted that because someone wanted a Mejzlik number...no biggie...I know the Mej is less loading.

Basically this new engine has the potential to be MORE powerful than my OS 1.60, weighs ~8-10 oz LESS (my OS was as I recall 49 oz with muffler/pump/mount, the Syssa engine is 38 oz rtf), and requires HALF the fuel load! Sounds like a great replacement for the OS.

Again for reference: a few years ago I had an OS 1.60 in a plane, and a flying buddy had a Saito 1.80. He bought a Mejz 18x6. His Saito turned it (from memory, so don't quote me) ~8600 and my OS turned it ~8800 - 8850 on a Bisson muffler, and either Cool power or S&W 15% fuel. In New Hampshire, maybe 200 ft elevation, mid-80's and HUMID.

There was something wrong with your OS!. Both of mine and a fellow club members spun a APC 18X6 over 9200 on 5% nitro with stock exhaust. The Mejzlik would spin 10000 rpm on 15%!
The OS does make 3.7hp and the Syssa makes 3.0hp after 2 gallons which must be over 6 hours of run time.

The engine on the BCM muffler never impressed me. The muffler was very nice, and built very well, but the engine just didn't run very well on it. The engine definitely runs best on the stock exhaust.
Now that I think about it a bit more it was probably a mejlik 18x8. I had the APC 18x6w on the engine, and I think I was confused with that. I only tried it that one day, and like I said it was mid-80's and maybe 95% humidity.
p.s. I spent a lot of time working in Groton, and stayed in Mystic, CT. I went to the field just over the border into RI (off I-95) a few times. I think it is very in or near Westerly. Maybe I met you?! Incidentally my OS was in a GP Soucy Extra 300S - I think you had one of those too. The Syssa engine would be PERFECT in a plane like that!

I don't fly at the Borderline club very often. Mostly at the Propbuster's Salem, CT field. I do have a Soucy but haven't flown it since 2005. I run the ST 4500 Bisson Pitts with one exhaust blanked off and a Hobbico extension on the other with the 160fx. Jtec dual snuffler is most powerful and extremely quiet.

That muffler was better than the OS 1.60 version on that engine. I met Nic Damuk and Mark O. at Propbusters a few years back. Good times, great club!
Anyway, I can't wait to see some more pics/vids/results from the Syssa engine.
Great job Todd! I want to get one, but it won't happen for 6 months or so.

Have not flown the plane yet, had hard starting and cleaned carb, put on bench and ran still in the 8250 to 8300 rpm on vess 18-6.
The muffler cam loose, but can not come off because of wire.
will use high temp silicone on muffler, do i need to let it set some before i put muffler back on.
