Default Volcano S30 Transmission Woes

Hi all,

I am new to the RC Nitro world, and am having troubles with my Volcano trans. When viewing the trans from the rear, the left shaft can be pushed in slightly, and the gears will then work properly. If I spin the trans gear where the motor connects for about 3 seconds, the shaft then pops back out towards the rear. The spur gear then will not drive the differential.

So, do I need to order the single gear trans upgrade, or should I dis-assemble the stock trans and fix it(although i have no clue what is wrong)?

PS: there are no stripped gears that I can see.

Not sure what parts your referring to?? If the main shaft of the transmission (shaft that both spurs and clutch ride on) is moving, there'sprobably a setscrew loose somewhere.. Most likely on one/or both of the drive cups.. OR If the dogbone is moving back and not spinning the drive cups, you can shim it a little by putting an "o" ring (or little piece of fuel line) in the opposite drive cup, to keep it from moving back and forth.. (The dogbone slipping is unlikely, cause if it slides back to the point where it doesnt spin the drive cup, it'll just fall out completely and you'd loose it.) Pull the tranny and make sure the setscrews are tight, and tightening up on the flat part of the shaft..

It is not the main shaft that the clutch and spurs are on, but the other shaft.

Thanks for your help!
i'd order the upgrade single speed transmission, although you will lose some bottomend power,it will save you alot of headaches . the stock tranny in my volcano s-30 lasted only 2 quarts of fuel and gears 3,4&5 stripped out.so i purchased the single speed from rufaster.com .

OK, Im still lost then.. I only know of the one main shaft in the transmission?Post a pic if ya can.. (Maybe the Volcano has a differnt tranny than the Tornado?)But I agree with BigMo, the 2 speeds are a pain in the neck.. I swapped the 2 speed out of my Tornado for the single speed..End of problems and seems just as fast as before..

EDit:Sorry, if this is the tranny you have, its totally different than the one Im talking about.. Sorry for the confusion.. (But if the shaft is moving back and forth, it's probably missing an "C" clip or something (maybe a setscrew), that keeps it centered? Pull it apart and see whats going on!Is this the one your referring to?

I think i get what your saying, and thats weird, try taking it apart and see if you can see why the shaft is moving. It shouldnt move back and forth.

My grandpa(who I fish with a lot) has a Merc 225 EFI on the back of his Ranger Comanche 520VX bass boat. I initally used "Merc225" as my psuedonym, but decided to move on to Merc250 because I liked it better.

I love to fish up here in the Natural State. We have it all, but I prefer to bass fish mostly.

I will pull the tranny out of my Volcano Friday night and post some pics.

Catch ya later Mickstix,

Merc

OK! Finally, I got down to the problem that was plaguing my trans. I actually has stripped a gear inside there. It wasn't a spur gear, but luckily, was the same size as the spur. I swapped the stripped one out for the aluminum spur, and all is well!

The reason the trans worked when I pushed the shaft forward is that I was engaging what was left of the gear into the other gears. The gear was totally shot except for about 5% of its surface on all teeth.

Yes, my trans is the one that is pictured earlier in the thread.

Thanks,

Merc

Glad ya got it fixed up Merc!! Sounds like a metal spur is the perfect piece for that situation! It doesnt look like there's anyway to adjust the mesh on all those internal gears? If not, I wonder why it chewed up your original? Prehaps a rock or something got in there? ANyway, make sure you dont have anything binding (that may cause it to happen again) and good luck!! You should post the part # for the metal gear you used to replace the stripped one.. Maybe others will do the same mod!

EDIT:Question for anyone that knows.. Why do most of the RCmanufacturers have a cutoutin the chassis, under the spur gear?(which can let small rocks and debris get into the tranny)??I understand the cutout under the flywheel, for startboxes and stuff, but never understood the cutout under the spurs, yet all the cars and trucks I have, have them..Thanks for any info!!(Note, if it's a clearance issue, maybe a small lexan shield would work to cover it, or maybe just recess the chassis and not cut the hole out completely?)

Too bad i tossed the package for the spur, but it is the Redcat Volcano S30 spur gear. I ordered an extra with the truck cause they "wear out." I have just over half a gallon through the truck and it isnt worn at all.
Thanks,

mickstix..

I believe it is for debris or water to fall or drain out without causing a huge prob... if anything got in there and had nowhere to go, it would just bounce around and trash many/all gears, or bind the whole thing up.

You know, your probably right! That makes sence.. I was thinkin "keep debris out", but if something happened to get in there it does need somewhere to do..
