Default Tamiya Pershing Owners?

1) Do you recommend this tank, I know dumb question.

The build will not be a problem as I can handle it because I am a genius lol. Ok seriously, what I mean is how is it for battling? reliability? etc. tankcarl commented about his, and that was some great insight. And I have looked over some other post's about the difference between the tamiya tanks. I plan on purchasing one in the near future and just would like some more info on them, as far as the wiring I have some ideas in my little noggin. Which I will be sure to post once I actually get one and start the build. so if anyone would like to comment please feel free to let'em rip.
This basically is just a post for fun and for these owners to post what they did, or would change during their builds, techniques, must haves, I know one would be the metal elevation arm upgrade.

Cheers,
Wade

Haven't built one, but know lots of lads who have.

Seems to be a pretty good runner and fighter OTB. Only complaint I've heard is do the wiring exactly as instructed at first, then improve on it. And, getting the TU's out if needed takes an act of God, so most the serious guys get the DP03 Pershing Trans Plate from Eto. That way, if ever needed to do heavy maintainance the TU's come out easily without disassembling half the hull.

Asides from that, just detail it out as little or as much as you want. Yellowshaker is just finishing up one, and I'm sure he'll comment soon. He's working at the moment.

Pershing is a great RC vehicle. It suffers only from a cramped interior and a lack of interest from the majority of the RC TANK crowd. Most would rather have a Tiger or Panther or KT. Once you tighten everything down it runs great and fights like a champ. As a matter of fact my Pershing is gonna get a refurb just to show the community Pershings need love too!

Im about to completely mod my HL Pershing. putting in a Tamiya barrel, recoil, elevation and com0plete mantlet assembly. Will eventually install the Tamiya electronics. the only other thing will be 3:1 gearboxes with 12 tooth pinions or Speed 400's. The HL hull and supension works great and the stock tracks are very good also.

My son and I have run our Pershing for over 5 years. It is nice to have some heavies on the Allied side. Just did a major rebuild at the end of last year, and that was mainly because it was accidentally kicked in the dark during a night battle and had a lot of exterior damage. Took the opportunity to upgrade to sealed bearings and. upgrade to Dean's plugs. Sevo is correct about taking the Gearboxes out. They are attached to subframe that is attached to the tank. On the other hand, this was the first time in 5 years that I removed the Gearbox.

I did replace the stock gun elevation unit with a servo. Did not like the 'rubber chicken' effect, and since our battlefield is so steep, max and min gun elevation is a real plus.

I will say this, I now have experience with only 4 rc tanks...HLTiger 1, HL PZIII, Tamiya Pershing, and Tamiya KT. Out of all of them, of which the HL's are both heavily modified, the Peshing is amazing to run. I also have to admit that I enjoyed the detail work on that tank very much. So much that I would easily buy another one!! I just want to build it again lol.
Only downside is the tight inards of the tank. I am planning to remove the upper hull soon so I can modify the wire routing as per The commander's instructions, and I want to install teh Turnigy chip too.The metal tracks made a world of difference in the tank too. Bottom linie...you will NOT regret buying this tank. In the words of a famous sneaker commercial, "Just do it!"</p>

Ksoc,
This may be a silly question, but what is a deans plug?

Thank you for everyones input, I was trying to decide between the sherman and pershing, I love how the sherman looks with all the stowage items and bags on the front, but, and this is my opinion, the sherman is kinda tiny compared to the other types, and I know this is a great tank very reliable, etc. I think the pershing just looks the part, and by that I mean it is aggressive looking. I do really like the Shermans and what members on here have done with them, also I guess I just wanted to have something a little from the norm of allied tanks. Now I just have to finish my Tiger 1 and my KT and I am good to go on the pershing purchase. If anyone wants to still add to this that would be great.

Cheers,
Wade

Rebellion, the only thing I wanted to mention was what really attrcted me to the Pershing was the details needed to make it ww2. I didn't know during the time of purchase that it was modelled post ww2...actually Korean war era. The great members here had pointe out the neccessary things to change it to a correct ww2 model. Buy some Mr. Surfacer 500 too. It is perfect for the cast effect.

Deans Plugs

They are also a more positive connection. The Tamiya type plugs intermittently drop out, cause 'mysterious' issues with the battle system such as your hit counter resets or you tank can never die.

Not only are they physically smaller, but you can also save space if you are willing to hardwire directly to the Deans plugs and get rid of the 'Y' cable altogether.

Hi Rebelion,
I sent you a PM about the North East Armored Division tank group. If you are interested in joining us we about 80 miles from you in PA. We meet and battle tanks here in NJ. We have members in five states and it is a great group of guys. I'll be driving thru Allentown on Thursday evening on the way to Danville for the three day tank battles there.

Here is a link to us..... http://groups.yahoo.com/group/queenspanzergroup/

Here is some info on you pershing question.

The Tamiya Pershing "wire hygiene" is vital. It is always a very challenging job. Be creative and DO NOT bundle the wires too tightly. My trick is to use cheap re-tieable wire tires from bread bags or the wire from the 21 Century Toy packaging on the wires until I'm 100 % sure they are in the best spot possible. I also use clear scotch tape to keep the reciever DMD neat. There are a few types plastic wire clips that I use as well. I will attach some pix for you to examine. If you need more room you can remove the speaker from the large box and remote mount it. I install a screen to protect the speaker and I also mount almost everything with velcro instead of the double sided tape. This was you can shift things around a little and change alignments or orientation. I have a method for the Pershing and when I am satisfied that it is the best position then I replace the reuseable ties with the smallest wire ties I can. Also, cut the ties with a exacto knife and not a wire cutter. The sharp end of the wire ties will not only cut your hands but can chaffe fine wires like the communication cable and IR emmiter wires. I also try to run wires underneath components in the tank whenever possible to keep them out of the way. In the Panther and other front gear box tanks, I cover the gearboxes to keep wires and dirt out while keeping the oils and grease in. I hope this will help you out. The M26 is a great tank but not very forgiving on "wire hygiene"..... Just remember it could be worse.... It could be a Leopard. The Leo turret holds everything and is very tight.

My 2 cents and I agree with all the other on target comments.

The Pershing, to me, is a beautifully engineered kit from Tamiya and needs little in the way of performance modifications. I have built a couple of them, and unlike my other modified tanks, both Pershing were built relatively stock and run great. As great as my more heavily modified WWII German Tamiya Tanks. For the Pershing builds, I used bearings; a metal elevation arm; a solid turret rotation gear – replacing the unit's slipping clutch gear and a long wired LED Emitter in the barrel, but that is it for mods.

The Pershing is a favorite backyard runner for sure and those 1940's streamlining side skirts will grow on you.

John

thank you for all the advice that is great, I would rather get the kinks out of the way during the build then after. Bob I will join your group once I have a little time, busy studying for college. Also I don't know how many "events" I can make it to, very hectic at the moment but I will join the group.

I have been running a Tamiya Pershing for 4 years here is what I would recommend
1. install a Daryl Turner Gear Box plate (you can get from ETO) makes repairing/replacing a gearbox a 20 min job instead of 5 hours.
2. replace 380 motors with 480 motors (gets speed down while improving manervarblity when down to 1 hit)
3. install rubbersealed bearings in the road wheels
4. cut the speaker box down to make more room for the battery (be sure to seal the box so that the bass sounds is preserved)
5. get the upgraded idlers
6. get a Darl Turner IR LED holder to mount in the mantlet
