I have an F-22 Raptor with the ESC located on this parts page:

I need the manual for programming the esc please.
If it is supposed to work with the same programming card that works with a Volcano/hobbywing ESC, I'd like to know that before I try it.

- Set the Voltage for your LiPo cell count.
- Set NO brake.
- Set SOFT Cutoff
- Set 7 degree Timing mode
- Set 16khz PWM

The motor will probably tolerate 15 timing mode, but this will make the ESC run too hot.

By any chance have you hooked up yours to a watts up meter or current probe to know how much current it will pull full throttle on the ground?
Do you know if an EDF motor will pull less or more current in the air when it's flying?

Yes.

I don't offhand remember the wattage, but I do remember that I saw it peg 46-48 amps on a fresh charge of the battery.

Remember that the provided ESC is actually 40A continuous ( it should be called a 40A ESC not a 50A one! ) and 50A burst.

So 46+ amps is over the maximum continuous rating of the ESC.

With the provided battery you will never hit that for long, as the voltage will sag fairly quickly..

However if you put in a larger battery ( which I have ) and run the motor full out, you may blow the ESC ( which I have ) with full throttle runs.

I ended up replacing the provided ESC with an inexpensive 70A one to use higher voltage or higher capacity packs.

Re: Air

As a rule? Yes and no.

This depends upon the KV rating of the motor and how fast the fan permits the motor to spin in static tests.

If there is a proper amount of overhead, then the motor will not spin up to maximum RPM's on the ground or in static tests, but it will unload in the air to it's max KV rating. When it unloads it tends to pull fewer amps. However never rely upon this alone, instead consider this to be a minor safety margin.
In a flat out climb the plane will max out it's power consumption/draw.

If your motor unloads fully on the ground ( not a good thing ) then it is likely that both the blades are stalled, and that you will not get full power out of the EDF. In this case the motor will probably pull the same amount of current on the ground and in the air.

Tried to take off and could not get it off the ground.
Dunno if the grass at my field was too thick or what.
I might try to put a larger diameter or thinner nose wheel up front before trying to take off of pavement.

I had looked at my fan, it looks like I had maybe scraped some off the tips of the blades once when I had spun it up in my hands to test the esc.
what's the max clearance between the fan and the inner part of the ducting before I get a problem?
Can replacement blades/fan be ordered seperatly?

IMHO you need at LEAST 2.75" wheels to fly off of close cut grass.

You could potentially fly this plane off putting green type turf, or smooth packed dirt, but you risk ingesting debris this way... and this plane WILL ingest stuff easily.

I fly mine off our club's asphalt field.

Re: Tips

Yeah this is normal. The blades expand due to the high RPM's and centripetal force.

You should pull the hatch off and spin the blades against sand paper to sand off a bit of the tips.

You want about 2-3mm of clearance between the blades and the shroud.


Yes you can order replacement blades from NP, or even pre-balanced EDF assemblies from other places.
There are a lot of options.

I found that the warehouse next to my work was empty so I flew it over there.

The Rx was getting glitches (my own spare Esky Rx I had) so I did not fly it after this quick test flight.

I wasn't suggesting that you change the wheels on this plane.

Rather that you do not want to try to fly it off grass. To fly off grass you need a bigger plane.
