I've got some real numbers for you. Hyundai Accent: 10.5 gallon tank. I only drive highway. I range an average of 325 miles a tank, so thats just about 31mpg.
I would figure a light car like that could do better on the highway, my heavy V8 is 28 mpg on the highway.

But then again, I am not into the whole MPG scene

Without cruise control, it's hard to keep it at 65 between the small hills going up and down. Plus it sips a bit more being the 16v DOHC.

Aerodynamic has more to do w/ the freeway MPG.. weight affects the city driving more (slow down and speed up)...

Good thing that there's a lot of definition for the word "fast"!

And faster than a Veyron..
Track speed. A Veyron is kind of fat.

See Top Gear's test :P

A little bit late and very pedantic..so apologies as I just can not let some things pass without voicing my opinion.

Evident by the fact that people lapped up (and subsequently killed themselves in droves) the 80s porsche carrera (to be more precise the first 969s) which were absolutely terrible cars, but nobody wanted to say so for fear of being a 'philistine', because a race driver could make them go really fast without killing himself.
Do you mean the 930...the yuppies car...now there is a word.
Put any spotty kid in a RWD with 300BHP and some serious turbo lag then inevitably there will be problems...add in the 1980s rubber and UK weather (and of course roads with corners)....then it would be quicker just to put the toaster in the bath.

Most of the more recent posts within this thread just make me wince a bit, maybe my veiw is skewed by the price of fuel in the UK.

I guess you're right. I usually drive at 250mph everywhere I go, so I'd be pretty dissapointed if my Caterham which accelrates faster than a Veyron couldn't do 250.

Accelerates faster to what speed? (0-60mph? 0-100mph? 0-200mph?) Or distance? (1/4 miles)

I am sure the Super 7 is pretty quick to 60.. but probably has a hard time at higher speed due to the inefficient aerodynamic..

Foxy, do you like electric cars? Do you see that taking over in Europe since the fuel is more expensive?

A friend of mine has a Chevy Volts.. his said he got 1350 miles or so between the last 2 fuel stops (7.5 gallon).. obviously, it is mostly plugged in.. but do you see more people in Europe buying things like this?
Hybrids are everywhere here now. Full electrics, maybe int he future, but Greece in particular lacks infrastructure, you cant even get more than 12Mb internet here, so I doubt they will be able to install the infrastructure to run electric cars for a while, plus as mentioned, battery tech isn't quite there yet, but it will be, sooner than a lot of people think. I think if it was a 'functional' technology, that 'most' would switch immediately and install mini solar farms to charge their cars. PErformance certainly wouldn't be an issue, the torque difference is as big at 1:1 scale as it is when you compare nitro to brushless at 1/8th scale, plus of course it's linear, no need for gears of any kind. Tis the future. How distant though?

GM is not selling too many of those Volts here in US.. they actually shuts down the plant for awhile since there's not enough demand...

Really? That's a bummer. I've seen a few Volts around town, on the way to work. Seen a few more lately too. I think they're pretty cool looking, which is much different than some of its competitors.

If I drove one it would be almost exclusively under battery power day to day.

That reminds me, we saw a Tesla Roadster in a parking lot in rural Michigan (by the in-laws) a few weeks ago. It looked a bit out of place. Very cool though.

I like the fact that they didn't design it to scream "ELECTRIC" all in your face.

Nissan Leaf: Made in Japan, 25k w/ Rebate, 100miles pure electric
Chevy Volt: Made in China, 34k w/ Rebate, 40miles pure electric

Take your pick.
Not to mention the 70mpg diesel Legacys, Polos, and other not available in the US....

By the way, I just ment low end speed due to lightness. Replace with an Arial Atom V8 or your choice of similar if necessary.

Looks decent to me

In all seriousness, the real one doesn't look bad but if you were seriously considering an electric car the Leaf would be the choice spec/platform wise...

Note the Z concept in the background.

I wonder how those ranges are measured.. I saw it on Leaf's website that it got up to 138 miles, if you drive it on a perfectly flat surface at 38mph.. so I wonder what is the condition needed for 100 miles...

That's not style, that's crap.

I checked again to be sure - yep, Leaf still ugly. Volt would get me to and from work each day w/out gas, no need for more range from an ugly competitor.

I just don't agree with that. For me (and many), buying cars isn't merely a "point A to point B" practical choice. Looks are important. Style. Features. The list goes on. If I didn't care about how it looked, nor did everyone else, we'd all be driving beige-mobiles that look like a generic "car" when you ask a 6 year old to draw a car.

If I were seriously considering an electric car, it would have to get me to work and back no recharge. Both the Volt and Leaf do that. Volt looks much better. End of story.

Now, you could argue that the Leaf's price is better - I get that. But I still wouldn't buy it due to price, since I just don't like it. I'm not dumping that kind of $$ (and any new car is a lot of $$) into something I hate. No way. I'd consider other options (non electric) if the Volt didn't cut it price-wise, or range-wise.

The Nissan will still do 100 miles more than the Volt at 38mph.

And if you bought a Leaf, you could afford to also buy a beautiful Italian Alfa Romeo (Or car of your choice) and offset the gas cost.

Winning.
