Default Golf Ball Cannon

Anyone into cannons? My dad just completed a 45mm "golf ball howitzer". It uses between 1 and 2 1/2 oz of black powder to launch golf balls. We plan to shoot lead and steel balls eventually but for now we're using cheap and plentiful golf balls! Here are some pics. That sheet of plywood was set up approx 100 yards away-- and look at the hole the golf ball made! Please give input, my dad would love to hear what everyone thinks.

Nice man. I wish I had a place to store one. Been wanting to make a cannon of my own ever since I found out that that muzzle loading cannons are legal to own.

Is the barrel rifled? I also hear they great for deterring tail gating when in tow.

lol Yeah it gets a lot of looks when you tow it around. It has a smooth bore, so it's not extremely accurate, but it was better than we had expected. We have one other cannon that is approx 70 mm and uses up to 7 1/2 ounces of black powder. We haven't any success shooting projectiles from it though. Tried using aluminum cans cut in half and filled with concrete-- they just fall apart.

Being a golfer, always looking for ways to hit it further
How far will it shoot a golf ball?

lol I would like to hit the ball like this cannon does too! We still have to test the max range, but similar cannons get around 1000 yards with a golf ball. The velocity is somewhere over 1000 feet per second.

Hehe I can picture that!

I just dug up some night shots of the bigger cannon (70 mm). These are individual frames taken from a video I shot. This was 6 3/4 oz of black powder.
