Mine shoots really well and so do my 223 and 204. I reload for those two. These are all fun to shoot. Oh and I also reload for the 222 mag. The 204 can really make a mess of something. Just think a bullet flying at 4000 feet per second.

How does the 204 shoot? I was thinking of a 204 or 22-250 for the very long shots. I have the AR-15 223 and have seen some people hit 860 yards. I was talking to some that don't own the 204 and just say get the 22-250 it's cheaper and shoots better. I was also looking at the 220 swift and know from research that is the fastest round but will burn out the gun in as little as a 1000 rounds. I just wunt a 500 yard shooter for chuckin and ground hogs. The .17 hmr can take down small game up to 150 yards but I think that's it's limit from what I have found, but is the best rim fire round you can buy IMO.

204 shoots real good it finds its target every time. It has Leopold optics and it is a CZ. If I were you the 250 is good, but I also recomend you get yourself a 204. I recomend all of the calibers. Just remember I think you will be happy with whatever you get. You are right a 150 yard limit on the hmr, but I have taken pdogs out much further. 22 mag is another rimfire that I like to shoot.

what do you use for animals such as deer and gazelles and such, a rifle or a shotgun?

I asked a gun nut if you only would have one rifle what would it be and without a pause he said 30-06. The round has been around for a long time and is still used today. All hunting rifles are compared to the 06 because it is the number one used round and is more then proven it's self time and time again. After he told me this I bought the savage 111 30-06 and I'm very happy with it. I shoot good from 50 to 200 yards and can group 5 shots at a 100 yards less then a 1/2 inch apart. I shoot lite only 150gr ammo but the 06 can go as high as 220gr. It is not at all a flat shooter but as you shoot it you become adjusted and will hit your target with no problem. Shotgun is only good for 75 to 100yards max. In a lot of states it's shotgun only so the state tells you what are going to hunt with.

RE: Hunting Thread
If I could have 1 rifle it would be the .222 for many reasons. I could shoot small game still (I started with this gun) as well as big game (I am a deadly shot in the neck or head). I have studied the skulls and necks of all my game animals. I know the right place to aim so my concience would be clear. I have hunted anything from gray squirrels to whitetails with it and never once had to shoot a 2nd time. My father taught me young and right....shoot once. He would say "you owe the animal that much...a quick clean death" and I live by it.

That would have been my response also. My Winchester has the original buttplate and that thing kicks like a mule. It is a heavy rifle but that is an advantage with the weapon so that it lessens the recoil slightly. The 7x57 is a good caliber with a moderate recoil but does not have near the knock-down power of the 30-06. The 6.5mm Japanese round has a light recoil but has good power.

In Michigan, the rule is it must be centerfire. There is no min. cal.. I shot most of my deer with a .222. I do not shoot shoulders though. I shoot them in the neck and dont have to mess with blood shot meat in the shoulder region. In the past few years I have hunted with my 30-06 and didn't care for it. So I bought a 25-06 which I fell in love with. I have hunted with it since. I still shoot the neck with it but now have longer shot possibilities provided I am confident with the shot. I will not take a bad shot. I see it happen too often up here. Folks bring out a huge rifle and think because it is big they can shoot carelessly. To date I have taken 4 deer that have been wounded by large cal. rifles with bad aim. Legs missing, jaw missing, 2 with holes in their ears! I cannot see how this happens but know the type that did it.

The ought 6 is a good choice my father uses it. His is a Savage and it has done him well. He took two bucks and one doe with it this past season. My choice if there was only one choice would be the .257 Roberts. I do not have one of these, but it is on my to do list.

RE: Hunting Thread
My friends dad bought a bunch of 30-06 gov''t ammo from like the 60"s or 70''s a time ago shot and reloaded it a few times (like 4 or 5 times) and he told me you find good ammo deals on 06 ammo. One of my dream guns is a mint M1 grand sniper rifle and have seen them go for $5000 with matching numbers.
The 30-30 has been around for a long time and the joke in PA is that, that round has brought down more deer then any other round. Shoot at the range and you talk to a lot of very cool people (some are nuts) and this one guy had a very nice 308 rifle with a bull barrel and was a very nice gun to shoot. I think the 308 is a nato round but they call it the 7.62 something[&:]
