my friend did the graphics business for a while. he has a JSI cutter. he's lettered a few stock cars and such. he charged $1,900 to letter 1 stock car. he also made logo's and stuff for like $40 an hour. he gave it up though because his parents hassled him about it and he got tired of it all and he gave everything to them lol

we are also friends with some 2 other guys who do the graphics stuff and they both have $20,000 printer/cutters.

I would have been impressed if you got a CAD-CAM 3-axis CNC machine. That way you could have custom designed your wown RC parts and fabricate them from scratch using alum billets.

Why? Do you have one? Not every one is made of $$$. You know how much a cnc machine cost?

I kow I would be putting it to use, especially if it were AutoDesk AutoCAD capable. Just design and make!

No, but I sure would want one! For an industrial greade one? Easily as much as a luxury car for one like the Rossi's use to make their engines. One capable of making bigger items can run into the millions. This is just teh initial purchase of the tooling. Then there are the parts that must be upkept. Dependin on what you are making, you might have to ask the tooling makers to design and make specific bits, cutters, and hydraulics to make it work. The more complex the motions the machine must make and the harder the material you need to cut, the more expensve the machine. Such is the way of industial manufacturing.

I think my company spent somewhere around $3 million for two very large 3 axis CNC machines. Expensive, but they can fit our products' hulls which are 11'x13'x24' steel. If you want something hobby sized you can make your own CNC router for $500 and use free software. It wont cut metal but plastics are ok. If you want a hobby size CNC mill capable of cutting metal you should be looking at converting manual mills which on the cheap is $600 for the mill, $300 for electronics, however much you want to spend on tooling (Id say minimum of $300), and an old computer. AutoCAD is only good for 2.5d. For 3d you really want something like Inventor, Solid works, Catia, Solidedge, etc. You use a program between the model file and the CNC to specify tool paths, feed rates, etc. I don't think you can draw a box in AutoCAD (or any program), hit send, and watch the CNC whittle away. CAD and CAM are two separate things.
