Default Sonic Combat Module Questions

The sonic combat module is very fun. My friend and I throughly enjoy dogfighting. But I had a question. In the manual, it says that when your plane is hit, it will lose power and emit a loud sound for 10 seconds. I was testing my friend mines and it only cuts power for 5 seconds. Could it be because I am in sport mode? Or maybe hobby zone changed it to 5 because 10 seconds is too long without power. I mean 5 seconds is manageable but 10 seems severe.

That's been my experience too, I think they made it 5 seconds. I mean really when you think about a dog fight, you can lose altitude fast trying to keep your speed up and 10 seconds without power is almost always a forced landing. The 5 second cut off makes for more fun, you have to tail your kill all the way to the ground. Reminds me of a ww2 fighter squad briefing, "Ok men! Stick with your wing man, 4 eyes are better than two. Follow your kills to the deck! If you get a flamer, let it go, he's a goner. If it's just smoking, follow him in, he could be faking!"

5 secs is my experience too. But can easily be extended to 10 by doing just like Yossarian said: slow down and follow your victim, then fire again just as he regains power Not a nice thing to do, but war is war [8D]

Yeah hobbyzone must have changed it. I've only forced someone to land once when they were low to the ground. He ended up breaking his foam nose off! (ABX)

Some humorous Stryker combat experiences....

So my brother must be cursed, he's managed to destroy, litterally, every one who fights him.

Case number 1! My brother somehow manages to dive his Stryker directly on top of our friends Stryker(while in flight) splitting the victims plane in two! The battery was torn out of the esc so fast it shorted out, causing it to smoke and smoulder. As we aproached the wreckage, we were all extremely awed to see the smoking remains which caused us to exclaim almost in perfect unison, "COOOOOOL!" Only damage to my brothers plane is he lost his prop.

Case number2! My brother is engaged with another friend and manages to get the upper hand when our victims Stryker was low on power. My brother swooped in for the kill causing the victim to crash land in a soccer field WHILE A GAME WAS BEING PLAYED!!! Very embarrassing but the soccer players found it amusing and used it as an excuse to take a break and throw up a bit from all the running around. Our victims plane broke the motor mount slamming into the packed dirt of the field.

Case number 3! Against my better judgement I take my brother up on a dog fight. Perfect day, no wind, not a tree in sight. Keep in mind I've fought my brother once before and actually beat him, so I had let my guard down. We both stand on the starting line, preparing to throw our planes and start the fight, when he suddenly turns his plane and aims it at mine and fires!!! He disabled my engine before I could even take off giving him a head start. I remember feeling a chill, perhaps it was a warning from on high, but I heeded it not and launched after him. I would estimate that my total flight time, taking into account battery life, the higher pitch prop I was using, the fact that I was WOT for the whole fight, was about 10 seconds. We never actually got a shot off, but I did manage to fly my plane into the sun, completely losing it, fortunatly, I was able to locate my plane by following the sound of it impacting into the field a short distance away. [>:]

So far the curse remains and my brother is losing interest as no one will fight him anymore(mostly because our planes are destroyed). Any challengers?

Jeez you guys are rough. We have a 30 foot no shoot policy (dont shoot when less that 30 feet up), no shooting during landing or takeoffs. I fought my friend and he was mad because I kept flying into the sun. I thought it was a good tactic especially with an ABC b/c it's orange. When we were tied at 2 hits each i get him when he was low on power (he never said truce). I think managing the throttle is a smart thing to do, just wait you opponent out and attack when he is weak. After all, there is no mercy in war.

One more thing, do you think an ABC vs. an ABX is a fair fight? The ABX pilot has about a year of experience over the ABC pilot.

Let's all congratulate Bobsta92 on his first post, he even managed to spell "loser" correctly. Now before I receive an irrate email from Bobsta92, with many correctly spelled words, let me just thank him in public for his honest critique. Thanks Bobsta92! I look forward to more in depth contributions from you in the future, perhaps you can even graduate to polysyllabic words, who knows, maybe you'll even write a sentence one of these days, but don't rush it.

Hello all! I'm new to rc flying and I am very excited about my new hobby! I'm far from a good pilot, but I'm working on it. I think it would be awesome to watch a dogfight with a couple of fully aerobatic 3d or 4d planes with some very experienced pilots!!! I'm just wondering with the sonic combat module, how heavy is it? Will it fit onto just about any plane?

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

Hi Jay. Firstly the sonic combat module is very light, can't be more than a few ounces but unfortunately it's proprietary to Parkzone and Hobbyzone. I guess you could put the system on any plane, but I'd think you would also need to put the Parkzone receiver and esc into the other plane as well. I'm not sure how to make the module work with just any esc sadly.

As you probably know, they've been doing RC dogfights well before the Sonic combat modules. Sometimes paper streamers trailing the planes and seeing who can cut the others tail with their prop to full contact sloap soaring where the idea is to knock the other guy out of the air! Here's some links to videos of combat and other neat stuff...

There's a few other vids associated with combat and just a ton of good RC flight vids. Enjoy the entire archive.

Yeah, but a combat module (either sonic or light-based) that can be plugged in e.g channel5 of a standard RX would be so much more fun than doing mid-air coliisions. Too bad that none of the RC stuff makers recognized what an awesome product this may be.

There is one guy who claims he's working on such a thing (see this [link=http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=369727]thread[/link]), but I'm not sure he'll finalize it.

B.t.w., it's possible that bobsta92 is the fellow drewfer was writing about (both are from Sonoma, CA), so the interjection was friendlier than it looked like.

The xport thingie is non-standard. A standard PPM to xport converter makes much more sense. There was some intense work by Mr. RC-CAM to do just that; google for it.

Hello everyone. Mr RC-Cam was sucessful in creating an adapter if you will, that will enable
the Sonic Combat Module to work with any radio system. I even have one in my 1/12 scale Great Planes Combat Corsair
with a glow engine. They work great! He sells kits to solder up yourself, or ocassionally he has Plug-n-Play units made up for
$24.00 or so. Check out this site for the links to his stuff.

If you want to use the XPORT on any plane, try out my EZ-XPORT. It will allow an XPORT module, including the sonic combat module to be used on any plane:

A friend I fly with has built a homemade adaptor to link the combat module to standard electronics. Beauty of his device is no PIC programming chip. Anybody can throw one together with moderate soldering skills and probably get all the parts at Radio Shack. Read this thread....and be sure to follow the link to the original thread because he might have more updates on there. If you build and use one please post about it. Try to post on the original thread but at least on this one below if you can't on the other...

This build will probably only cost you about $10-$20 in parts. Less if you have some of these very comon components laying around.

CritterHunter, will it keep track of hits and shots? The AirCommander is premade and programmed. It will keep track of hits and shots and also have 5 games to play built in. For only $35.00 no soldering no finding parts.

IT ALSO WORKS AS A LOST MODEL LOCATOR.

No, but he could easily modify it to keep track or play various games. It does have adjustability on the time the motor is off and how fast it shoots, so you can handicap certain people. These $20 combat modules can be found at most hobby stores for Parkzone/Hobbyzone planes and so are more comon. It'll also allow you to fight those planes with planes using standard electronics. The parts to build one are probably already in the junk drawer of your average electronic hobby guy, or can probably all be found at Radio Shack for well south of $20. No pic programmer needed either. I'm modding mine to produce machine gun fire and will post that info when and if it works.
