Default 1500+ Watt MEGA-Zilla Stryker

Note: Title was changed because my wattmeter needed to be replaced(it read too low).

Hi all,
I finished my latest Stryker build on Friday. Here is a list of components used and I will post some pictures over the next few minutes.

MEGA 22/30/2 motor, 1770KV
Two parallel 5S1P 2100 Thunder Power (18.5V)batteries connected with "Y" cable.
MEDUSA Research UBEC 2A 6V and Opto Isolator.
Castle Creations Phoenix 80 ESC
JR micro 6 CH receiver.
2 cooling fins next to each other, one 30mm, the other 20 mm long, 1 O.Z.
total
(2) Carbon Fiber tubes from Midwest? #5723 0.45grams/inch, .196" OD 2 ft long
Plywood Elevons made from Midwest 1/8" aircraft plywood.
3/16" motor mount made from Midwest aircraft Plywood.
Dubro 1/4 scale hinge
Dubro 4-40 rods
Dubro Clevis
Hangar 9 Control horns for Ultra Stick Lite 120
3M Extreme tape
3M Packing tape.
All up weight is 44.75 O.Z.
APC Pylon 6.5X6.5 Prop 1525Watts, 26,850 RPM, 86.4 Amps with batteries full.

APC E 6X5.5 with full battery 29,650RPM.

It hovers one notch above middle throttle position (when you let go of the nose and the wing touches the side of the leg).

Always have fun,

In one of these pictures you can see the end of the Carbon fiber tubes that I used to run from the rear forward. Two go way forward, the third is a short piece that "T"'s into the other C.F. tube running side to side under the body. The motor mount covered up the end of the rods later.

Notice that one of these pics shows a tape going under the fins. There is no sidewall for the fin. I cut them all off flush with the body, so I could run the 3M Extreme tape across the wing. Later on I glued them back in.

Hi guys,

I am expecting 125+ MPH, but if it doesn't radar above 120 MPH, I will prop up some more.

It appears I may have screwed up. The ESC toasting in almost 2 minutes half throttle may be my fault by not providing cooling air while holding the plane.

I need to deal with the ESC. I can buy another one new without much down time.
The only thing that I am considering is my father. He is going to visit early Sept. I'm thinking if this is going to crash or disappear for some reason I want him to see it at least.
I am laughing as I am writing this but really you never know.

So I should maiden it first week of Sept.

Have fun,
Gryphon

Default RE: 1100+ Watt MEGA-Zilla Stryker

Thunder Power Batteries just put out higher "C" rating packs and they lowered the price some, little heavier (I think maybe bigger, not enough data yet).

I only have (2) 5S 2100 cell packs, which is good for one flight 5S 4200 with "Y" cable.

I think I might buy the new 3850 5S (22C) which will be weighting the same as my 4200 above, but give me 3.85X22=84.7 Amp continuous rating.
Other option is to get (2) 5S 2070 (25C) packs, then 2.07*25=51.75; 51.75*2=103.5 Amp rating, but the problem with that would be that I have to carry another 1.33 O.Z. which will raise the weight to 46 O.Z. I don't think I'll do such a thing till I maiden it, plus a few more flights.

What sort of $$ have you put into this stryker so far?

I'm guessing you have well and truly crossed over into the 'dark side'

I have been thinking around $800, but I just added up everything. I think just over $850. But that includes everything like shipping, a little tax, various glues, tape, motor mount screws, prop adapter, prop, and connectors.
I need to find a job quick. It was not all at once.

Gryphon.
Totally sick man!!
1 suggestion, reduce the size of your fins..actually 2..try and smooth out the front end..I used an Ultrafly f16 nose filled with expanding foam on one of mine,on another I carved out a pool noodle to a pointy shape, really smooths out the front end.I also cut off the fake air ducts and glassed the whole thing, but I see you have vents thru the vents so to speak.
Maybe think about venting thru the canopy...better think "swiss cheese" with that setup...
Best of luck.
Bleary.

bleary , It is a Swiss cheese already.

These pics I was not going to post but here you go.

***Keep in mind that for the front battery area, when you see those two black likes under the battery. That is the only area that the battery sits on. The rest is carved out for channels on the sides of the battery and also under the battery.

***What do you think it took to stuff a 5cell 2100 in the electronics area? Check it out. I melted the floor all the way down. That is why I put 2 strips of Extreme strapping tape under center of the plane front to rear.

***On the left side of the plane, you will see some thing between the rear battery and the fin. That is the receiver that has been sunken in and covered with Extreme tape. Same thing was supposed to happen to all the other electronics on the other side, but last minute I found room inside.

I need to hack the rear gray cover some more, because I have made sure for all that air to come in, but it needs more room to exit, I think I will widen and lengthen the slots.

Always great to hear from you bleary.

Yep,thats the go,keep her cool. She should be sweet in flight, maybe not so much in static as you have unfortunately found out.Watch your fingers...that is a serious hipo setup.
Very impressed.

I decided against running a UBEC. I think I was getting some interference from it. So I needed to get a separate battery to feed the receiver and servos.

I contacted http://www.batteriesamerica.com/newpage8.htm and described to them the sketch that I had drawn up. They made a pack to my specs and I had it in my hand later in the week from across the country.

So where am I going to fit (4) AAA size NiMh 900 mAH batteries?

The only spot left on the plane. The handle cut-outs under the body.

Two batteries will fit in one, two batteries will fit in the other. The packs plug into each other with small JST connectors and make 4.8V, one of packs has a second lead that goes to the JR receiver. I will use extreme tape to seal them in and leave the very front open for a couple of fingers and a thumb to help for launch purposes.

I am thinking about running that large switch which has a built in charge jack and 3 voltage indicator LEDs. I don't mind the weight, but the size is bigger than I thought.

umm, gryphon in your first post you mention it will hover with only one extra click above half throttle. Mate, that seems like a fairly extreme and expensive way to go to be able to hover.. If thats what you want why doncha get a 3d plane?

Seriously tho', that thing will be scary! You must have bigger kahuna's then me. And to think I thought bleary's 500w setup was mental........

Default RE: 1500+ Watt MEGA-Zilla Stryker

clovus,
I just got a whole lot more intimidated today.
My last meter (fairly new) had gone bad, and I thought that I was pulling 76.25 Amps for 1159Watts.
Today, I found out that I am pulling 10 Amps more and it has almost 400 Watts more than I thought(full charge battery).
Extra 400 Watts??????
That's why I just got more intimidated.
My father should be coming to town soon, so I think the maiden flight will be before the end of next weekend.

I have asked my brother to provide a Video Camera.
I know he is going to fly it more than he will video it. LOL....

I will install the battery by tomorrow, sure glad to get ride of my UBEC.

***Oh yeah, since my digital scale only goes to 5.5 LB, I could not put the Stryker nose down, zero it out and then punch it. The combination of Stryker's weight and thrust would go over the 5.5 lb limit.

So I stood on the bathroom scale, held the plane, gave full throttle. It showed about 4 1/2 Lb thrust with APC pylon 6.5X6.5 prop.
I need to repeat it again with a digital bathroom scale or another scale that can read up to about 8 LB.

I do have a cheap digital fish type scale, $15 from some cheap clothing store. I will rig some thing up and give that a try too.

Fiver,
the APC 6.5X6.5 Pylon prop runs at 26,850 RPM. I verified that with my new Hyperion E-meter guage and my buddies tach.

I guess he can have his tach back now that my meter has a built in tach as a bonus. LOL....

Read the first post on here for a second prop/rpm info.

Hi all, I have not had a chance to place a post and pics.
Maiden flight was about 3 weeks ago.
Will try and place a write up over the next few days.
I will tell you about the good, bad and the ugly in detail.
I am still waiting for my brother to send me a copy of the video to see what is on it if anything.

To help slow the plane down for maiden flight, I used an APC 6.5X5.5 which drew 69.5Amps on (2) 5S-2100 TP batteries, I can not remember the RPM.

Note: I will change the title back to the original 1100+ Watts Stryker; The 1500+ Watts is with both batteries fresh off of the charger. The numbers from the first few seconds of battery use are meaningless. That is only excess surface charge and it drops off rather quickly. The numbers are a lot more stable with 5-10% of the battery discharged.
So again with an APC 6.5X6.5 I recorded a 76.25 Amp, 1150 Watts with battery partially empty. It drew 86.4A 1525W with battery fresh from the charger.
I consider the more stable 1150Watt more meaningful than 1525W that drops off real fast.

Let me get my pics together and do a write up in the next few days.
