I was talking to my fellow friend at the hobby shopp and he said he got his new AMA and it had these crazy rules and it says that nothing except for the landing gear can be touched on the ground intentionally. Touching the tall is not allowed. Is this true. If it is, what is going to happen at next years Joe Nall
hopefully this rule isnt true but i read it in fine print. Has anyone else heard this?

Wayne, do you perhaps know the reason behind this rule. I mean it isn't going to stop me from trying it or anything, but I am curious to know why there is a rule against tail touching.

No need to worry about that one.
Here's the line from the safety code:
"9) ...nor should any part of the model other than the landing gear, intentionally touch the ground, except while landing."
Clearly, this rule doesn't pertain to us. I've never intentionally touched my rudder to the ground. It's happened a bunch of times, but on every one of those occasions my intent was to touch the tailwheel to the ground or to hover a quarter inch from the ground. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Actually I have done some intentional tail touches, but I've always yelled "landing" or "touch and go" first. The rule does make an exception for landings.

Probably the perceived safety issue with tail tapping.
Is it going to stop people from doing it? Nope.

Did anyone see the new movie "Freaky Friday"? There's a phrase in the movie that really applies here:
FUN SUCKER

So as long as I only touch the grass or the asphalt/concrete it's Ok, right. If it hits hard enough to touch the ground it's definitely and accident.

In the Feb 9, 2001 EC meeting minutes this change is discussed but not voted on. I can't find a vote in any of the more recent meetings. Time to contact the ama and find out how this change happened.

HAVE NO FEAR BROS!!!!!! I have a solution.
Can't touch the tail on the ground huh???????? I don't know about yall, however I have been bored touching the tail on the ground for some time now.
We have been putting out obstacales to touch the tail on. Tables, chairs, other airplanes, garbage cans, pilot saftey barrier (glad I don't have a pic of that) and other unmentionable things
At the Houston Hoverfest we will have items to touch the tail on.
If the AMA is going to make rules to what we can and can not do, one of two things needs to happen:
1) We (Pro Bros) form a AMA S.I.G to defend 3D or
2) We go 100% Outlaw
I would prefer to become a defender of 3D. I have flown Outlaw for many years. In my area of the world, outlaw flying sites are becoming slim. I am already a member of 2 clubs and for 2004 I may be a member of 3, however if they limit the way I fly, my club membership dues will be zero for next year.
If they people making the rules fly around in a circle, 3D may be in danger.

A man with a plan! But your right it does get boring touching, so now I'm taking an attitude that i'm Chip Hyde, so I'm doing the Chip Hyde walkaround and 8 point rolls 3 ft of the ground! I just hope my plane stays together now.

Well Tony, we still disagree on that one.
The SIG makes us more under their control, not less. If you think you'll get a waiver for all Bros to violate the "no tail touchy" rule, all the time, anywhere, you're dreaming! In my humble opinion, of course. But I guess we don't want THAT debate to erupt again do we?
I say we exercise some civil disobedience, next big event at Muncie (ie $ pit) we all show up and tail touch our faces off!!! But I am a bit of a trouble maker!

Well,
I guess what I am doing now is really bad,,, I have been doing hand launch (EASY), and hand landing. And yes I still got all my fingers. All the spectators really get a kick out of that one. I do like the idea of obsticles though.
Maybe, put a wire hook and pick stuff up hmmmmm?

Ya. Me too. I hover out of my hand almost every takeoff. But I don't have the sack to grab one yet, I'm not as fast as some!!! I don't plan any major changes to my mediocre yet enjoyable flying style. And I doubt anyone else will. But if someone gets it, there won't be any insurance coverage there!
