Converting Profiles to Electric
I have an interesting new hobby, it's trying to convert 5 pound glow profiles to electric. I'm on profile number two right now. I have been taking pictures so I thought I would show how I made a mount for my BL motor. It's not that hard and so far it has held up on 2 really torquey motors. This was my first attempt. The second one looks a lot nicer.
I have had to cut the "mouth" of the motor mount on both of the profiles I have converted.
Then I took some nice hardwood and made 4 pieces of triangle stock.
I have a piece of ply under the triangle stock. This might be over kill but I thought it would need it.
Then I put ply on the front. I even angled the triangle stock for some right thrust.
I had to drill a hole in the ply for the shaft to go through.
I covered everything.
I mounted my AXI.
And that's it.

Looks pretty cool, man. I still have to decide on a .25 sized electric profile. Maybe a super fat free taco project this winter, or a mini 3D. I probably won't buy any glow engines for a while.

RE: Converting Profiles to Electric
this is still in the x phase of defelopment hovers at 1/2 not pushing anything axi2808-24, 3s1p, 2100 TP lipo, C.C. 35amp, AUW 22oz
im lovin it, made it for a freind he got me a motor and esc for doing it, same as above,
here is a different way of mounting. i could take a close pic if anybody needs it for the motor mount, its just a 1/2" x 1/16" aluminum strap drilled for the motor bolts and screwed into plywood blocks in the nose.

Spastic
That's the very size I'm looking at doing for E power. I like the flatter airfoil. If I hadn't just bought that new Nitro profile.......

RE: Converting Profiles to Electric
thanks guys here is a close pic for the visual learners, there is another hole for another screw in the bottom end of it but it isnt needed, its allot stiffer than it looks or than i though it would be. and i like that the aluminum acts like alittle more heat sink, right thrust is done by sanding it into the nose before covering. I was going to do like Billy did but was to cheap to get the mounting hardware, the advantage i see to billy's is that in a crash you will maybe only bent the hardware and hopefully not the motor shaft
oh, and the plane is close to taco size 36" ws and 38"length. and that is a 10x3.8apc which sounds small but i wanted to get a full season out of the lipo.

Really like your mounts guys! Billy, that one looks similar to one I did on an E-Taco with Swany.
Spas, I have not seen a mount like that. Looks cheap and like it would give in an 'emergency'
I've been messing with my own conversions, trying to get them right. I think I am really doggone close...

RE: Converting Profiles to Electric
Swany that is pretty.
Spas - We studied your mount and think it is perfect for the small to medium size stuff. For the big guns (4120 and up) we think some tabs on the top and bottom with a bolt going right through the fuse would work. So it would be just like your mount but it would wrap around the side and hug the fuse with a bolt through the top and bottom piece.
Next I'll take some pics of where my batteries live.
My goal was for the batteries to live on the fuse on each side below the wing. The problem with that is that it sux in knife edge. So the batteries have to live in the wing to keep everything balanced.

Well, I have decided to keep the electric guts from Spidey and put them in another profile. I am either eyeballing to convert a EF Edge or the new OMP Katana ARF. Probably the Katana. Will go with a different battery though, and use a higher discharge pack. Will use a 10C rated 4S3P 4500 mah from Falcon Batteries. Should be neat I think. I'll keep you guys informed how te conversion goes
That motor mount for the axi looks neat Billy. How much weight did it add (if any at all) ?

Hello, I got a question for the Accel pilots, or anyone else witha katana gs40. Any setups for the katana for electric. Just wondering on motor and battery size. Thanks.

RE: Converting Profiles to Electric
The kat 40s should be no different than any other 40 size conversion to electric. I'm not the expert in this area as I always just call my buddy Dave Thacker at Radical RC and he tells me what I need. Billy Hell is also very knowledgeable in this area as he used to work at HL and did some seminars on 40 size conversions before.
