Default twist 3d for a fun fly/ what engine?

HI, I just bought a hanger 9 twist 3d which I am going to use as a fun fly. The previous plane I used for a fun fly was a modeltech magic with an OS 52fs. It was pretty decent but it wasn't my plane. With this twist they recommend a 40-58 2stroke or 72fs. I was wondering what would be a good choice for a 2stroke for this application. A 46ax a 50sx or a 61fx. From what I've heard the 46 might not give me much pull out power if Im playing around and hovering. This will be used like I said, primarily for fun fly events, but also I will practice 3d stuff too.

Thanks.

Hey bud, I have a twist and it had a OS.50sx. I flew it with a 12.25x3.75 and 12x4 APC props. It was flown with 10% fuel and would pull out of a hover, but not very well. If/when I screwed up my hover I always would roll it into an upright position and fly away. I wasn't able to really muscle it out of a problem. Even with that said, the 50sx is a great engine for fun-fly stuff. It is in fact the combo I used to do real well in my first fun-fly. I have since gone on to a paul swany "MOJO" and I am using all the gear from my twist for it. Another engine you might want to look at is the Mangum .52xls 2-stroke. I ran my .50sx a little lean too many times and it has very little compession now. I bought the .52xls to replace it and I couldn't be happier. It runs exactly like my 50sx did when it was healthy and actually pulls harder. I paid 79.99 thru tower for it a little while back and about 150.00 or so for the OS. I'm not sure where you live but if your close I do have parts for a twist if your interested (Wing, fuse, etc) I will pretty much give it away.
Your going to love that twist you got, it has been my favorite plane so far and I really hope I have as much fun with my new one as I did with it. Feel free it PM me if you have any questions.

I have a twist - flew it with an os50 until bearing failed. Now it has a magnum 52xls on it with apc 12x4 prop - this combination is good for fun fly/3d on a budget.

I have a similar airplane (same size/weight) and one of MDS .58 works fine on it.

with a apc 12-4 or 11-6 prop. also have a mac pipe
just for looks power is probably the same but
much lighter then stock pipe. my plane was right
in the middle of rec. cg with my batt and rec up
to the tank.you will love the twist , i like mine more

Hey thanks for all comments,
I'll most likely go for the OS 61FX and just over power it. It sounds like from what most people have said that with a 40-50 size engine it will still be tail heavy so might as well over power it. I already use a 61fx for my 40 sized Extra300L and I like how the engine runs so I think I'll get another. Hopefully it will work out well.

What has everyone's final flying weight been with this plane?
How well does the twist do with tight loops and outside loops?

Thanks

By the way I live in Alaksa.

I forgot to ask about engien mounting. I noticed that the firewall already has preinstalled blind nuts, will a 61 size engine fitt with the motor mount with that configuration? Also one other engien I forgot to consider it the Webra 50? Any experience with webra engiene? They are even comming out with a webra 55gt.

FWIW, you know a 61FX is .1 oz heavier than a 91FX (per O.S. website) dont ya? And a 91 would be GROSSLY over powered.
Dont know if there would be clearance to swing the wood a 91 would require.
Try a YS 63 or Saito 72/82.
Just my $.02

I know cause a 91 is just a bored out 61, bigger hole = less material less weight, however I certainly don't need that!

Those who have the twist with engines bigger than 40 size, were you able to use the original mounting location?

Well I finally decided to go for a Webra speed 50 instead. It's a little cheaper than the 61 and is lighter and should put out enough power. Does anyone have any suggestions on what prop I should try?
THanks

I use the apc 12x4 on all my 50-53 engines due to it is lighter and the engines spin up a bit faster than the apc 12.25x3.75 prop

I've got a twist and use a saito .72 with a 1x6 or 13x7 apc prop. any larger four stroke will definitely be overkill. a .61 2 stroke would probably be too much. mine wieghs almost 6 pounds, but will still hover at half throttle with either prop. btw, i use 20% nitro fuel. mostly just a preference. better idle and runs cooler.

Well I've got the plane all together and it's definetly tail heavy with the webra 50 but the good news is its still light. I have the battery underneath the fuel tank as far forward as possible and with a brass spinner it will balance at 4.5" from the front of the wing. The total weight is at 4.75 lbs which really surprized me!

I'm thinking of runing a fuel with 10-15% nitro and I was gonna try a 12X4 prop but the shop here doesnt have one so in the mean time I might try an 11X5.

Will this be too small for break in? I know you want to usually go bigger diameter smaller pitch but this is within the webra recomendations; What do you guys think?
Thanks

Anywhere in the 11x4 - 12x4 area should be good. The APC 11.5x4 and 12.25x3.75 are both popular on the Webra for a profile. (I've got a 11.5x4 on mine.) If you are tail heavy, either of these props should help, they are heavy. I don't think there is one best prop for this engine - there are too many variables - personal preference, altitude, differences in individual engines, ect.

I just finished my Twist. I put a Magnun 70 4stroke with a 14X4 on it. Awesome combo. This is my first 3D plane and so far it's just a blast! Takes off in 10 ft or less and out of site verticle is no problem at all. I haven't learned any 3D manouvers yet, but I don't think with this combo it will be a problem doing anything. I can bring it down to just above idle and bring it in at a walking pace. I bet with some practice I can drop it on a 3 point landing with no roll out. With this motor, I mounted it as far forward on the mount as possible to allow room for the carb linkage and it balanced right on 4 1/2". The manual says between 4"and 5". Should be no problem moving CG back a little once I get use to it more. So far I have nothing but good to say about it.
Smiling from ear to ear,
pETER

Mine with a Saito 56 hovers at a bit over half thottle with a 12x8 I only run 5% Nitro though, its pretty cool. Wow!, any larger than a .72 will rip the front off!

pcinc: Chuck that Magnum on a Mojo and then try vert mate

I have a Saito 72 with a 13 X 6 APC prop on my twist, more than enough power, a real fun plane to fly.

Hi Guys,

Just got one of these..................

I know this sounds a bit too much but i have a spare Rossi 60 with a tuned pipe laying around............... im thinking of using it in the twist, but im in 2 minds as to if its too much and would rip the airframe in pieces in flight

My second choice is a Irvine 53.................

Any comments ? lol
