The exhuast oil is not a concern for the servos. Most servos have seals. I've never had nor heard of anyone having any problems with tail servos. Tail servos are commonplace on large aircraft also.

I tend to agree about the power of the ZDZ but I don't see any significant weight penalty - the Moki 2.10 wheighs 46oz without muffler and needs a healthy fuel load and the ZDZ weighs 50 oz without muff (but including ign.) and would'nt need as big a tank. Unless you guys think the OS160 would fly it OK up here (4700ft) Iam leaning towards the ZDZ - but I can't get ahold of anyone at OMP as of yet.....

Default Oil & Servos

The servos in my CG Extreme 330 have been getting puked on for several months with no problems. I always wipe them off good when I'm done flying. I wonder how a mouse' can would do on the 160? We put a larger size mouse can on an Aviastar 150 a while back and it helped a bunch on top end. The Aviastar is a 2 stroke like the OS. The latter is a MUCH more friendly engine.

ASAT, 4700 feet is a healthy altitude and you will definately feel the effects. I used to fly at Edwards AFB, CA which is at roughly 2100 ft. I could tell the difference even there. As I've said before I'm convinced the ZDZ 40 will be a great engine for the big profile. As with most giant scale planes though you will have to manage the throttle and downlines. A profile plane typically exhibits a lot of drag versus a standard airframe and you don't want to overspeed.

I changed my mind. Just read on rcshowcase that the ZDZ40 is actually lighter than the rcs180. So I guess if the plane flew well in terms of weight with the 180 then the ZDZ40 would just be the same with more power. If anyone puts this combo together and flies it please post your results.

REALLY?! Guess I should have bought a ZDZ40 instead of the RCS180. Ok, I'm taking up a collection to fund the project. All you guys chip in and we'll give it a test ride! Just kidding....hmmmm, Christmas is coming up! Maybe I'll ask Santa for a new engine.

My GS540 kit arrived today! It took 11 days.
The wood is bundled in shrink wrap. Looks good, haven't gone over it with a fine tooth comb yet. I'm finishing up a scratch built profile fuse for a Wasp wing first, then I'll dive in to it. Can't wait!

BTW - My computer was screwed up and was unable to open the CD manual that came with the kit. I called OHM and they responded in a big way immediately. I spoke to someone who stated they'd have someone who is technically inclined give me a call. A got a call from Ed within 5 minutes and he walked me through how to fix my computer.

Needless to say I was very impressed with their service. They helped me even with my computer.

I still haven't started the plane - I'm taking about a week or two break in building. I just finished a scratch-built Sledge-type fuse I put with a Wasp wing (flies great - best flatspinner I've owned).

Actually AFTCG that was me who you talked with to fix your computer problems. Ed was the first person you talked to. That was a first for me (your particular computer problem) but I'm glad it worked out. Keep in touch with the build and post some pics when you get done.

Default OMP Giant Edge and a Saito 1.80

I flew my OMP Giant Edge 540 yesterday for the first time. It has the standard setup with 4 servos in the tail, but I'm only using 1 in each aileron. Because of the light weight of the Saito 1.80, while building I was very careful about using the lightest wood in the tail. I cut a hatch in-front of the wing and installed the battery there. The weight of the plane came out at 11lbs 12oz. The c.g. was approx. 23/8in behind the wing tube. The plane flew very tail heavy. By the time the tank was almost empty the plane if rolled inverted would do an outside loop! The plane was so much fun to fly I still put 5 flights on it. I was running 15% nitro and a 18x8 prop. The motor is new so I was running it rich but there was still plenty of power to pull out of a hover. It wouldn't accelerate going up but would just keep pulling. I'm going to try to remove as much weight as possible from the tail. I'm going to replace the 2 rudder servos with 1 high torque digital. The push-rods in the tail are very heavy so I'm going to carbon fiber. I don't want to put any weight in the nose to balance it. If you have a Saito 1.80 laying around this is a very nice combo.

Thanks again Mike. After I build/fly the GS FF, I'll have to try out your 35% Edge.

Default 35% Edge

Well, you'll love that one too, I guarantee it! It's actually the easiest plane I have to land!

Mike P,
Do you know the weight of the GS540 with the OS 160? What size tank did you use and how long can you fly with it?

Default engines

There's been a lot of talk on different engines. I'd suggest a search on those threads. My weight was 11 lbs, 14.5 oz ready to fly. I use a 14 oz tank and fly for a good 10 minutes with fuel left over. Keep in mind you are not flying full bore all the time.

Hello All,
I have gotten? alot of usefull info on this bird from this fourm and as I am starting to build mine now,
I have decided to use a moki 210 for 2 reasons
1 I have one
2. seems to me that a 3 or 4 to 1 power to weight raito would be a absolute blast !
my only consern is the prop
does any one know where you can get a 22/4 prop?
want thrust -not airspeed hence the low pitch
thanks
Frank

Default 22x4

If you find said prop please let us know.
Another Moki 2.10 user! Great! You're gonna like the way it putts around at low throttle.
I was swinging a Zinger 22x6 and my engine is still not broke in. It performed well but I wanted a little more pull out of a hover, so
I bought a Mejzlik 21x8, Menz 22x10 Ultra and a Menz 21x8 standard.
Can't wait to see the difference in prop pitches.
My guess is that this engine is better served at lower rpm's with a higher pitch prop and not trying to duplicate the smaller 2 strokes performance and rpm's. The Moki 2.10 is not going to like a high rpm like the smaller 2 strokes do.
Enjoy your OMP Giant Egde 540!

I fly the big Aeroworks profile Extra . It's Saito 180 powered and a complete hoot. BUT THIS Giant Scale Edge 540 Profile LOOKS BETTER . I like the Edge wing and I really like the number of sq inches of wing area. Wow. I thought our 80" hershey bar wings were great on the Aeroworks.

It sounds like this is a better build over the Aeroworks. The AW had bad instructions, distorted plans, etc...

Mike, where's the c.g. on your plane? Mine came out at 2 3/8" behind the tube. This was extremely tail heavy as it would outside loop when rolled inverted. The instructions say 1 1/2" to 2" behind the tube. I can believe moving the c.g. up 3/8" would be enough.

Default CG

My CG is about 2 inches back right now and that's a tad tail heavy but I like the way it flies. Waterfalls are almost balistic to the point where I feel I have to back off or the prop is going to cut the tail off! It still climbs slightly when inverted so the ideal CG would probably be right at 1.5 - 1.75 inches back.

P.S. Since when did an "Extra" supposed to have a Hershey bar wing anyway! lol.

Mike P,
Thanks for the info. I have a Moki 1.8 that I could use, but was thinking on the OS 1.60 to save 1/2 pound plus from what I hear the OS is quite a bit more fuel efficient than the Moki. Tough choice!

Trust me guys, this plane doesn't know that it's hauling around a heavier engine, (Moki 2.10 - 1.80). If you mount an engine that's lighter than the Moki, it's going to float like a feather.
In fact if the wind is blowing a little bit it doesn't want to land!
Mine floats in with no wind and I'm runnig the Moki 2.10 and a Bisson Sport muffler. I have a 18.5 ounce tank but will be looking to change to a 24 ounce when I get comfortable with it.

Default the 2.10 or 1.80

i would not recomend the saito 180 for this plane i do not think it will pull it out a hover!!!!!

i have a moki 1.80 on mine and i'am now building carbon fiber gear for it to lose the pound that the original wieghts. it will pull out of a hover with a 20x6 prop but it is slow. i'am getting about 7800 rpm with this prop. i'am going to try a 19x8 bolly to try to get a better performance. iam not a heavy builder either actually left some stuff out to get it lighter. but i have not wieghted the plane yet either would expect around 12 pounds.

and no the plane will not know its carrying a great big ol engine will land like a baby. i bet it would fly good with a brick on it's back too but i don't think it will pull from a hover with it back there. if your going for 3d duild it light and the most horsepower you can harness for it.
