Default Scratch built Burrito

I've posted this also at the ProBro forum, but maybe you're interested also...

I'm currently building a Burrito completely from scratch. I'm using a 9mm diameter carbon tail-boom. So I'd had to make some improvements because the original tail-boom is 12mm. Setup I'd had in mind: Magnum XL52 + 12.25x3.75w. I will post some photo's while making progress.

Thnx! I'm not building very pretty right now. Still looking good though, but this project needs to be finished ASAP. Wing is as good as finished. Shearwebs and servo-hatch need to be added later on. First I'll go further with the fuselage.

Keep you posted.

Tonight I'd finished the fuse more or less. Joined the parts together. They align pretty nice for first fitting.

I've modified the rudder a little bit. My Diamant No-Limit 3D has the same idea. It makes the rudder very stiff, what always is welcome for some knife edge or whatever.

I'd do some balancing. The stats:

Rudder - 12gr.
Stab. - 15gr.
Elevator - 14gr.
Motor mount + carbon* - 110gr.
Fuse - 64gr.
Wing - 178gr.

Total weight: 393 gram (13.9 oz) w/o ailerons.

Magnum 52XL - 392gr.
Muffler - 110gr.
4x S3001/S3003 - 150gr.

Total: 1045 gram. (36,9 oz)

The weight/performance ratio is getting very interesting! My all in weight should be around 1500-1800 grams (53-64oz) I suppose. And that with something about 3kg (105 oz-f) thrust from a 12.25x3.75w prop. Awesome! 8) Power to weight ratio of almost 2:1...

*The carbon is getting shortened, providing a weight reducing of an extra 10 to 20 grams.

I've bent the landing gear at today. It's made of spring-iron (how do you call that? ). I'd use a bending machine at school because it's very though material. I'm quite satisfied with the result, it's completely symmetrical!

I'd glue the whole Burrito together with some Epoxy tonight.

Overview

Servos are build in.

Stabilizer aligns pretty nice with the wing.

Yeah, Burrito sure does kick ass! 8) I'd take it to our field for the first time today. Did some CG and range checks (new receiver) and that worked out well. So I taxied to the landingstrip and gave gas. It took off straight, no trim was necessary. So the fun could begin. Starting with some torque-rolling, rolling circles, knife-edge cubans, and stuff like that. The Burrito hasn't got any strange rudder-couplings. I'm very satisfied with the result! Vertical performance is just sick. What a acceleration, unlimited vertical into the clouds! Just great! It hovers at 25% or less. I use a Magnum .52XL with 12.25x3.75w by the way.

Some photos a club-member took today:

My Burrito is still going strong. It's becoming a hype in the Netherlands and Belgium since I've posted my scratch-building report on the biggest RC forum in the Benelux, Modelbouwforum.nl Real nice! So there should be a lot more in a couple of months.

First hovers and torque rolls at eye height were made tonight. Even rolling harriers, knife-edge spins, knife-edge loops and blenders! 8) My Burrito is 3.7lbs by the way, given was 4.0-4.5lbs straight out of the box. What's the weight of your Burrito? ...just comparing some specs...

I'd take some other pictures of my Burrito. This time with my own, higher resolution camera instead of a club-members cam.

Today I've programmed a Elevator-Flap mix on a switch of my T9-CHP (FF9). The Burrito is now able to make 90° turns much easier than before. Ideal to start with a torque-roll at a couple feet from the ground. Only thing is that the ailerons are not responding the way you were used to. Nevertheless a quite cool feature, witch is worth trying.

First in-flight pics were made today by a club member.

Inverted low pass at 2 ft. following with the begin of a torque-roll at 8 ft. did result in a engine failure. :? The Burrito did a stall-turn and planted the model on his nose on the ground. Result: A broken propeller. Big deal.

Great build jorrit, i followed it on the Profile brotherhood. Very clean build and a great flying site! I only have the wing to finish today and then my burrito is ready for covering.

Have fun with it

Did you use a laser cutter? The cuts on the balsa ribs and ply looked so clean! Great job man

Thnx everyone!

@ Funflyaddict - Thanks! Nice! Another Burrito! What colorscheme are you going to use?

@ srg123cohen - Nope, I've used a couple of templates to cut and grind my ribs into shape. I have the principle on photo from my Diamant project. I wish I had access to a Laser cutter, or CNC-mill. Maybe I'm going to build one some other time. You've got small kits with 2/4-step electrical engines. A little DIY and a Dremel and you've got a simple CNC.

Some examples:

Today I did add a extra landing gear to my Burrito. It's just for fun and not permanent. This is so ugly! But it would be fun, landing upside down.
