PBXL from HSRCM RTF

Well, here is a report about my PBXL first flights.
First flight- I was carrying out to runway by holding onto fuse, just forward of rudder servo when suddenly the glue joint gave way and off she went, flat on its back on runway, upside down. No damage other than the broken fuse. First flight very short!
That weekend, after repairs, my son (19 yrs) was moving some stuff around and either dropped something on it or dropped the plane. Result--ripped out the landing gear. No problem, I just removed it!
Two repair jobs without getting airborne!
Second flight attempt resulted in the proverbial runaway plane when, for some reason, the battery/receiver connection failed. I was not using a switch but was plugging battery directly into a short servo extension, like we do on our combat planes. This is the first time I have ever had a failure, but somehow the plug lost contact and away she went, about 5 seconds after launch. Now realize, I had not flown it before and no trimming had been done since it had just been launched. That crazy thing flew around for a good 35-40 seconds making rather lazy circles in the field, maybe 150 yards from where we lauched it. I had just started a slow turn after launch and apparently this was the attitude it decided to maintain when the battery connection failed. About 1/2 throttle, we were enjoying the flight when it finally caught a wing tip and cartwheeled a couple of times. Damage--ripped out servo mounts and a nicked up wing tip--took about 6 hours to repair since I had to re-fabricate some ribs, the wing tip and recover. Also added a good switch!
Third flight--launced without incident. Flew around a few times on a windy day. Really did well at nose up flight into wind, did some rather clumsy hovers and "torque rolls", landed dead stick just as "purty as you please."
Refueled and self launched for fourth flight. Took a little more time this flight and flew around a little. Plane has a tendency to dart up and down if speed gets too high, but then Kevin warned of this. Got some altitude and tried to upright spin. The crazy thing went into inverted spin, and I was unable to recover. I did manage to really flatten out just before impact with terra firma. Damage-rudder hinge pulled out of balsa. Could have fixed at field with CA, but it was cold and I had an SSC plane to test fly.
All in all, it was a hoot. I have since read on Dave McDonald's web site how to spin and recover pizza box planes, so I will be ready next time!

Boy - Greg, Your PBXL as a rough life with very little flight time. Regarding the 'death spin' that you infer to, I found that if you hold up elevator in it, it stays, if you give full down elevator and drop the throttle to an idle, then give it a bust of throttle, it jumps out into an inverted flat spin. From the inverted flat spin, you can come out of the aileron, holding full down elevator, and with a burst of the throttle, it jumps out into upright flight mode. I hope that your succeeding flights are a heck of allot more enjoyable for you.
Since you have knock out the landing gear blocks, you may want to consider modifying the center section to install a conventional landing gear block and install aluminum landing gear like I've done on my newest PBXL. I like it allot better, but this is personal preference. I have posted some pics of these modifications someplace on RCU.
Good Luck and enjoy!
Kevin
