Does anyone still make a 60 size Hots kit? I know you can easily get plans, but are there any kits to be had?

I went looking recently, and only found the parts kit that Morris Hobbies is making available for the "Hot Hots", to go with the plan featured in the January 2002 RCM article.

If you find out differently, please post it here. I always liked the Hots, including the old Midwest .40-size kit.

Midwest discontinued these kits some time ago. You may at some point find one on sale in this forum or ebay. Expect to probably pay more for it now that it is discontinued, if you find one. Dazzler

These have remained a favorite over the years. I hope to see another run of kits from someone. I'm anxious to see one of the Hot Hots locally here soon!

I also can't believe there are only Morris versions of this plane. Nothing against Morris, but they just don't look quite the same. A club member here has a 60 size Midwest (long out of production BTW) plane and guards it quite well. It's truly an unbelievable plane to see. It flies slow or fast. The roll rate is unreal. It hovers quite well dispite the smallish elevators. It does nice knife edge loops, and looks really mean on the flight line. All of that in a quite small package. I guess I'll go back to building from plans...

If you like the Super Hots then you might be missing out in not scratch building one from the M.A.N. plans. That one is 3/4 of an inch thinner in the fuse but the wind does not come off. I built mine with no ply except for the landing gear block and firewall. And it is my very first scatch build I have done so i did go over board on the wings , but all up weight is under 6pounds with a .91 Saito. And I increased the ailerons from stock to 3in at the tip and 4in at the root added 2in to the elavators and 3in to the rudder and 1in to the stab farward. But I am sure i can get my next one much closer to the 5pound mark or less. Will keep posted as far as mods go and there effect.

I have one of the Morris Hot Hots, they just kitted the plane as designed by Mr. Hots himself "Dan Santich" wrote him a letter a few weeks ago and talked to him about this airplane. Seams he modified the original airplane to reflect modern funfly designs.I plan on enlarging the plans to a .91 stroker size after I finish and fly the .45 size I just bought.Lee

Have you thought about ordering a set of plans for the Hot Hots from RCM and enlarging the plans to 60 size. Lee

If I was going to scratch build then the up size Hot Hots would be fine. Either that or the M.A.N. plans are easily attained. The shop in MI may have a kit or I've seen two partially built ones that look good too. For my taste I'd prefer the older style as the Morris has the Su-Do-Khoi look to it as well. Just personal taste I guess.

Morris only kitted the Hot Hots Dan Santich designed the Hot Hots. I 'm building a Morris kit now with a Rossi .45 with every modification that can be made to one, maybe 2.6 hp.Hope this will be a good fun fly.Lee

Yes, I understand. I'm just saying that I prefer the older styling. Since my AW Edge came in so heavy, I have a 91FX and a Jett muffler without a home. Sounds like a great power plant for a 60 size Hots to me. It's a shame to have an engine without a plane to fly it in.

Well lets see lol. If you have the M.A.N. plans for the Super Hots I do think that if you also got plans for the Hot Hots then you can incorperate the new changes with the old and get a light structure that still looks like an old Super Hots. It isnt that hard to scratch build from the M.A.N. plans, this is my first plane i have built including kits lol. That i did from scratch so it cant be that hard lol. And I did make a few changes .. The ailerons are now 3 at the tip and 4 at the base and i increased the elavator by 2 and the rudder by three and the stab by 1. Yes all in .in. lol. And Running a Saito .91 for power. It is heavy because i overbuilt the wing, all up weight 6 pounds. But I am already at work on the next one and should be much lighter. I Will cross my fingers give it its first flight tommarrow. And if it comes home in one piece i can let everyone know how it flew with the changes.

Mine is a 60 size SuperHots. I had a ST 61 ringed engine on it w/a 12.25 X 3.75 APC. It was a lot of fun but the bug bit me to enlarge the tail. I scabbed in enough to enlarge it by perhaps 20%. I then installed a ST 90 ringed engine with macs tuned muffer and a 14X4 Zinger prop. (I just ordered an APC 14X4 to see how well it works) It's a blast to hover and fly. Either engine/muffer combo would be plenty of power. It's the one in my avastar pic. My wife always teased me about covering every plane in red and white, so I used a gradient scheme. This is a design that never seems to die. I wish someone would take note and kit it again.

Dream Flyer, I think that your Super Hots at 6 lbs with a .91 is not to bad at all , I think I understand from what you said, that the Super Hots design is a little lighter than the Hot Hots. My Hot Hots should come out at around 5.00 lbs. Lee

No the Super Hots is not lighter. The Hot Hots will come out very much lighter probably in the 4pnd range. I will have to talk to a fellow club member today at the field. Yes I am in south texas so we can fly har har lol. I was just saying that if you had plans for both you could take the best from both and get a lighter plane then the original Super Hots and do allot more with it. The one i built was well an experiment lol untel i saw the Hot Hots as i enlarged all the control surfaces as such. Now the Super Hots Built to the M.A.N. plans is lighter than the Midwest version but the wings to not come off. And I supstituted all the ply in the formers for balsa along with the fuse sides and only used ply for the firewall and the landing gear. Any more info please feel free to ask.

Is your scratch built one flying yet? With the all balsa rear fuse can you snap it hard? Even with "stock" control sufaces it is really manuverable. I'd almost be afraid to give it any of the high "G" turns or snaps. What do you think?

I had a Midwest Super Hots. I used some carbon fiber along the side and bottom. It looked too thin just behind the wing. I had a OS .91 FX on a Macs pipe. It held up to everything untill I pulled out of a power dive and the Horizontal stab broke off. I would suggest adding some braces to the tail
