dntmn,
Is that 4 lbs 20oz or 4 lbs 2 oz? 20oz would be over another lb...
Mine weighs 3lbs 15 oz dry.
Also, who is the designer of this plane, and is it distrubited by anyone except Jet hobbies? I'd like to get a purple one too, or Better yet, that 20 size looks perfect for my old .32 SX!! I wonder if jet will ever get more in?
Thnx,
Matt

TailSpnr,
Sorry for the delayed reply, I was away for some time.
The prop on my enlarged 'Magic' is the APC 13x6 pushing the Saito 72 at 10,200 rpm, CP15%... max rpm on ground is 10,500, richened to 10,200.
Regards
Marcus

fun air 40 almost ready for flight!
Well, almost done!
I made some changes!
pics in my gallery
1 I put nylon bolts in for the wing. Very EZ
2 I put Rudder servo up front with pull/pull. Had to raise the servo a little to clear elevator servo. (no big deal!)
3 Put in 2 washer of right thrust. (can hurt!)
4 Made a cool tail wheel (no steering)
Will test fly this week end!
PS can't wait!!!!!!

I saw your gallery looks good, I like the Rudder servo setup and tailwheel. I placed my rudder servo beside the elevator servo and cur a recess in the former with a dremmen wheel for clerence.
Let me know how she flies

Thanks
The tail was very simple.
I just took wire and bent it to fit the wheel and the put 2 4-40 blind nuts in the tail of the fuse. Then made a U around both bolts and tighten. Worked out great!
how did you route the antenna? I just ran it down the fuse and out the tail!
Was your main landing gear crooked? mine is way off!

I ran the antenna out the side and attached to the fin with a T-pin and rubber band. I dont like running antennas paraell to metal pull-pull cables. My gear was straight and stromg for the size. I replaced the stock wheels with 3" wheels for high grass takeoff/landing.

Fun Air on Floats
I finally got my pictures! Here you go, a Fun Air on Floats:
As for the antenna, I just ran taped it to the end of the wing. It's kind of a pain when taking the wing oh and off (which i rarely do), but it's out of the pull cables.

awsome plane!!!
What do you use for a water rudder? How does it track on water, come up on step...etc
I have a Balsu USA Laker that was very critical in the thrust angle to make it come up on step

For water rudder, I simply cut a piece out of an old soup can and solder it on the end of a piece of music wire. I had to run another pushrod off the rudder servo for control, but I wanted a steerable tailwheel anyway. I just stick the music wire in the tailwheel bracket.
As for floats, they work great. I've used the Cunningham float design that was published in RCM for 5 sets of floats (5 different planes), and they all have worked flawlessly. The plane hops right onto step and flies away. With this float design, as long as the step is right under to 1/2" behind the CG, and there's a little positive incidince btw the wing and the floats they work great. I just use the "that looks about right" method.
Here's a link to the cunningham plan:

I also bought a fun air 40. It was the first arf I had put together. I put a mds 40 engine on it and it weighed in at 4lbs 12 ounces. I had to add a piece to the rudder so that it would reach the bottom of the fuse. I also had to trim the rudder a little bit for clearance with the elevator throws. This was the first plane I ever landed and it comes in nice and slow. With the mds 40 if I was not coming in just right and had to abort the landing in the last few seconds it would not be a problem. I would like to find out how the funfly 20 goes together and flys. My last landing was a little rougher and ripped off the landing gear as well as the plywood that it was attached to. So it is back on the bench for now. I put bigger wheels on it for a little more grass clearance and used an 11-4 prop.

what does the MDS 40 weigh? I have heard of these planes comming in at 3 and 1/2 libs with a TT .42 . Did you weigh it wet or dry? When you put the gear back on get triangle stock two inches longer that the gear block for extra support. I am using 3" Ultra light wheels, and Mine lands extremly slow.

Did you actually get a MDS engine that runs? Not to bash your engine or anything. that's great, but also amazing.
I just have one question: how did you do it?!?

I got this engine on a trade with some other items. It seems to be a little slugish in the midrange but I have not tuned it to much yet. All I did was point the nose up and throttled up and if it ran I kept flying. I have had 1 deadstick out of about 10-12 flights and that is because I ran out of fuel.
As for the weight of the engine I do not know. My scale is very cheap so it is possible that the weight I gave could be off. It was taken dry. :stupid:

First Flight!
This plane flies great!
It was really windy and the fun air 3d flew great!
It flies real light, turns on a dime!
With the TT 46 I was at 1/2 throttle most of the time.
Unlimited vertical on full throttle.
My only complaint is the tail wheel setup. I really wish I could have a steerable tail wheel just for taxing. The is no problem taking off because once it's moving you have rudder control but, once it slows down on landings you can not steer it at all!
I can't wait till the wind dies down to do some hovering!

for taxing I have my rudder throw set to 45 deg. I gust give full rudder and bump the throttle to taxi. Try riving full left rudder and slight right aileron, at Idle on pavment then rapidly go to full throttle. It will do a new maneuver i call it the
"Upright flat spin without loosing or gaining altitude less than a millimeter off the ground"
...LOL

On my Magic, I'd hold full rudder in the direction I wanted to go, then apply down elevator and blip the throttle to hop the tail around. FWIW
P.S.: I like doughnuts!

Well Ive had mine long enough to rip the gear out 3 times. I think Im just a little too hard on my gear. Ofcourse this plane is fun....my favorite way of ending the flight is to take it way up, enter a flat spin, let it run out of gas, spin it to about 40' and pull out and dead stick it on the runway.
But I gotta tell you the more I fly this thing the more I love it. It will really do some crazy s***. I'm up to about 5 ways of entering flat spins right now. Both inverted and upright. My favorite entry right now is from straight up at half throttle, very high rates, both sticks upper right hand corner, after about 2 revolutions move the rudder stick...and yes I said rudder to the left, let it flatten out about 2 or 3 revs and then move the rudder stick back to the right. At full throttle it will almost hang there in an inverted flat spin.
And its a great plane to hover. Not quite as easy as my Magic was but thats probably my set-up.
And by the way, mine with all standard servoes, TT42 w/ MCP, 720mah nimh 5cell pack weighs 4lbs 12oz. Swings an 11x4 APC and hovers at a touch over half throttle.

Do you mean 3 lb 12oz as per a previous post?
mine is 4lb 2oz with a Saito .72 and the saito weighs a lot more than a tt .42?
My favorate way to enter a spin is snaproll input at 1/2 throttle then rotate to a little opposite aileron
