Fun AIR 3D 40
Your right Dntmn, I dont know what I was thinking last night. 3lbs 12ozs sounds a whole better. It may have even gained an oz since my landing gear reinforcements.

Fun AIR 3D 40
I broke my landing gear once, It was not the planes fault. Sometimes I fly at a small field near my house. The field is 70'x380' with 15' to 30' tall trees on all four sides, as well as a pipe and cable fence surrounding it. The Fun Air Lands so slow and stable that I can fly at this field no problem, but when you do a low-n-slow inverted fly-by 2' off the deck then jam full throttle and deadstick 2' above the trees it ois hard to recover. The gear became the sacraficial lamb to the tree beast. I reinforced it with triangle stock 6" long and have had no problems since. A friend has a 3lb 14oz Fun Air with a TT .46pro and standard servos. One of his bolts came out of the gear in flight, one pass the gear would be straight the other pass it would be sideways. I think he invented some new aerobatic moves by trying to spin the gear all the way off. The gear never came off and sure enough it was sideways on the landing. The result was not pretty, but it has since been repaired and loctite has ben placed on the screws.

Ken,
It should be posted within the next few weeks, likely along with the new RCU site. It has been submittedand approved by RCU and the plane manufacturer. I would send it, but with all the pics and videos it is 30 or so meg, being my first review I am anxious to see it launched also.
Keep looking
Dan

RE: Fun AIR 3D 40
You need epoxy for the tail surfaces, Depending on what engine you are using you might consider an additional tank. Also you might consider 4-40 hardware, this plane has large control surfaces.

RE: Fun AIR 3D 40
I almost forgot, get some 3/8 triangle stock. You need it in the aft end of the fuse to support the fin, look forward in this post to see pics. This is detailed in my review, but it will be a couple of weeks before the review is published.
Hope this helps.

RE: Fun AIR 3D 40
Flew mine today!! I like it! Took of within 2 feet Flew very light. Only trouble is that My Elev is on crooked!! I was epoxying it on an leaned over to ckeck everything and my hair went right into my epoxy. I dropped everything and ran to the shower with acetone and simplegreen. After about ten min my hair came out allright but the elv was a little crooked. Anyway it flies great. I had to make different gear so I could use a tower pipe w/os46. Now much taller but almost riped out before I evern flew. VERY weak. Overall its the plane I have been looking for!!!! Thanks for all the info on this funair!! Good name!!

Ya Its real nice with the pipe. I am so used to this engine with a pipe I just stay that way. It hovers with less than 1/2. I a have always heard this on rcu but have now finally felt it. I took the rachet out of the throttle stick and really like it. No in between clicks.
3 flights and a wheel fell of in flight. Just harrier to landing. No problem. I love this plane so far. Now I have to move the cg back.

RE: Fun AIR 3D 40
I just picked up a Fun Air 40 from Jet Hobbies last weekend. I have some questions on assembling it:
1) I'm a bit puzzled by how the dowel connection to the elevator works. Seems like it would get snagged by the fin. Do you cut the dowel short of where the fin is, if you do, it seems like you would need quite a long metal rod, doesn't this flex?
2) I'm not familar with the type of connection used for the rudder, I've only used pushrods before. After looping the steel wire through the eyelet, what do you do. I see short copper tubing, do you thread the wire through this, then squeeze it? Is solder used here?
3) What sort of servo should I be using for the rudder? I will be using JR 537 (standard 45 oz, ball bearing) for other surfaces. Is this also ok for the rudder. I have a Hitec 605, but don't want to use this unless it is needed.
Thanks for any info.
Malcolm

1. See in the first couple of pages of this post about making the fin stronger, offset the control horn on the elev to one side so the pushrod will go beside the fin.
2. run the wire back through a second time, crimp the metal sleve, trim excess, then heat shrink the whole thing. The pull pull should be tight enough to give you a dull thud when you strum it like a guitar.
3. I am using a 605, the standard should be ok, dont get the pull pull to tight

RE: Fun AIR 3D 40
New report if anyone cares.
1. 50sx w 12.25/3.75
2. Lighter wheels
3. cg at 1.25 in back from spar.
Very nice now. Balance seems just about right. Hover is nice with LOTS of throttle left.
On the wood pushrod I just ran it alone the starboard side in the fuse and back. Short wire up front long in back. Clevis to starboard side also. Run the wire through the copper through the clevis and through the copper 2 more time for a good hold.
The servo you use will depend on the flying you do. I caould use a standard cause I never fly fast and dont really need a lot or power.
Now I am trying to make it lighter!!!!

I'm just finishing up my Fun Air. I see you are also building a Katana 72". I recently bought one of these, the price was just too good to pass up, even though I won't be flying it for a few months. I live a few miles from Jet Hobbies, so I can pick up some good deals. Very good people to deal with.
I'm amazed at the value these direct from China kits provide. About half the price of a US kit (which is still built in China). The instructions are poor, and I'm leery of some of the hardware, but given the price, I can afford to replace some of the hardware.
