Knife Maiden today, we survived!!!
Well, this was the day. Picked it up from the LHS Thurs (my B-day), assembled it Fri and Sat night, Flew today!
Setup: OS .50 sx, hs 425s all around (that will change when I get $), 6v bat, balanced at 5" Weighs 5# 4 oz
First flight was VERY short! Deadstick after takeoff, landed with wind, flipped over and broke Rudder counterbalance. In true ProBro fashion, I fixed it with thin CA and up I went.
Forgot to put Expo into the Rudder. WOW, the rudder is very effective. I'm so used to expo I could't Knife w/o doing a loop, and hover was UGLY (picture fat chick wiggling her but!). Landed and expoed the rudder. WAY better. I've got lots of dialing in to do, and lots to learn.
I'll have many questions, but for now It's BURN MORE FUEL!!! I've now got 3 3D capable planes and I hope the future is very bright!
I know it looks a lot like Billy Hell's, I wanted the checks, and I hated the pink, so it was pretty obvious. But I promise, the bottom won't say Billy Hell!

Congrats Gordo. Both my knife arfs weigh right at 4.5 pounds with the small JR digital servos and a small 700MAH 6v pack and micro JR 610 reciever. Was it windy there today? you will absolutely not believe how much easier 3D is when the wind is dead. You will shock yourself with how good you are when its calm. Many happy flights!

Thanks Steve, I wanted to know what your elevator throw was? And yes, windy. You know, light and variable (15 to 25, going to zero at the worst possible time!!!!!

I give mine all the throw I can (45 to 80 degrees). My ailerons are almost 90. I also run 45 to 50 expo. I just flew a buddies new Knife and man did it feel different from my old Knife. Felt nicccccce.

I have my elevator throw as much as possible but you would be surprised at how little you actually need for hovering and harriering. Waterfalls are a different matter however. The alerons also need a lot of throw but only when you are really slow and stalled out. I used to run expo on everything but when you are in a harrier and need aleron in a hurry that mushy feeling that you get from expo just wont cut it. More and more i am not using any expo

Knife Maiden today, we survived!!!
Got to spend some time with her today, settled down a bunch. made some small changes. Here are my questions:
KE has big time roll coupling, takes lots of aileron, normal?
Harrier bobbles big time, porpoise like a dophin! Ideas?
CG is a 5", and I think it needs to go back more, what do you guys have?
Thanks
Gordo

Your cg is fine, I have mine at 4.75"
yes they do roll couple but thats why they make different planes for different purposes. The knife hovers and harriers the easiest, the topcap or sledge do knife egde and other things better. the knife is what id call a hover/harrier trainer it make these moves easy. Harriers are rock solid on mine you just have to find the knifes sweet spot

Hey Gordo, sorry for the delay.
The roll coupling is normal, you can use a rud>ail mix but it will never be correct for all situations. Try doing your knife edging with more speed and less rudder.....the more rudder you use, the worse the coupling.
Doing a harrier is a balancing act between the throttle and elevator. If the nose is popping up and down on you, then you're not getting them in the right proportions. Try doing them on low rate elevator.....like Constrictor said, the Knife needs a surprisingly small amount of elevator to harrier.
Hope this helps,
Gary
P.S. I do most of my harrier/hovering on low rate rudder, and the only time I use hi rate elevator is for waterfalls. FWIW
