RE: Yak Attack!!
I like the Yak, and the "Monsterons".
The video is great, but the one thing that made my eyes pop open in the Shock-Flyer video was the sanps. Does the Yak snap hard like a S-F? I like Wanyes colors too. They look really bold for just plain ole' Sharpies. Wayne- Do you draw the straight lines against an edge of some kind, or pencil it in and free hand it? Also, do any foamies tumble? |
RE: RE: Yak Attack!!
I just use masing tape to tape it off.
|
RE: RE: Yak Attack!!
Yep, it's short coupled so it snaps pretty fast....a lot faster than the ol' Trident did. This plane is all around better at the 3D stuff. It has a pretty short tip chord, you could probably move the hingeline up and shorten the wing chord even more to get even faster snaps if you enlarge the ailerons. I just enlarged the ailerons but didn't move the hingeline. Not sure about tumbling...or what tumbling is. Waterfalls are tight.
The Himax 2015 4100 will bolt into the GWS D gear box, that's what mine is in. |
RE: RE: Yak Attack!!
hey Wayne, you any close up stills of your servo/battery set-up on this EXTRA?
thanks Gator |

Here ya go.
Jeff W. desinged another good one. I flew it outside last night and its a blast to fly. I put it right up there with the Yak's that everyone is flying now. |

RE: RE: Yak Attack!!
hey thanks Wayne, what Razor motor is that?
I got a design comeing real soon thats gonna "ROCK" augers world:D |

RE: RE: Yak Attack!!
So, how much are these little foamies going for? The shock-Flyer looks to go for about $35, when anyone has them to sell. How much is JW getting for the extra? (It looked to fly a bit better than his Foam Sledge.) What does a Yak go for?
I'll probably be cheap, and just use the GWS motor that I have. If I get light enough LiPos, maybe it will be OK... Other than electronics, what is needed to put the plane together? |
RE: RE: Yak Attack!!
I'll sell you a Yak like in my pic for $35 + $10 S&H. All you will need to finish it will be some 30 min epoxy and some foam safe CA, and a couple of floppy disks for hinge material. All you have to do is glue the wing and horiz stab into the fuse and mount your gear.

RE: RE: RE: Yak Attack!!
Can you "Guestimate" the performance with a GWS motor and gear. I've been using a 11x8 GWS prop, and I guess I'm at about 12 ounces of thrust at 9 NiCad cells. I'll be looking at the LiPos (probably 3S 500s) to fly this one. Is the GWS motor a dead end?
Also, do you mean colored and everything for $45, or in white? |
RE: RE: RE: Yak Attack!!
White.
The GWS motors are fine power-wise on 3S lipos, but they don't last very long (maybe a dozen flights). I tried mine on a 8Cell 720 NiMh pack and it was way lame. The upside is, they are only $10 a pop. 12 oz of thrust isn't gonna do much, we are all flying in the 25 oz thrust range to get this performance. I went thru 3 or 4 GWS 300/350 motors on 3S lipos when I started. The plane flew great and the motors gave out quick, but I got a feel for how much fun it was. Now that brushless motors have dropped to the $50 range, it is a lot more feasible to just start out brushless. It's harsh on the wallet, but IMHO you will just be spinning your wheels with anything less than Brushless/Lipo. If you are looking at 3S 500 Lipos, make the jump on up to 3S 1200's. They are getting cheaper all the time. And one brushless motor will outlast many airframes unless you reall screw it in hard. You might look into 2S 1200 lipos and the GWS set up, the lower voltage will help the motor life and a 2S 1200 lipo is a LOT lighter than an 8 cell NiMh... If you look at mine and Wayne's set-ups, all I can say is, with 3 packs and a charger you will be looking at spending $400 to $500 to have a plane that will fly like these. That's the gut wrenching part. The good part is, the planes are so light that the expensive bits almost never get wasted, just slap them in a new airframe and go. |
RE: RE: RE: Yak Attack!!
Very true.
I wasted too much money replacing 350's Havnt had an ounce of trouble with the brushless set-up. Its really the way to go if you can stomach the initial cost. And, the only other issue is if you can find someone who has Razors or Himax's in stock. |

RE: RE: RE: Yak Attack!!
OK guys, like it or not, I'm going to try and learn something here!
1) If I get a Himax 2015 4100 motor, and have a GWS "D" gear box, do I just get someone to pull the pinion gear off of the GWS motor or what? How does the pinion gear go on the other motor? I know that the motors are hard to find, but so is the cash to pay for one, so I can wait. 2) What ESC is needed for a motor like that that will protect LiPos from an over-discharge (POW!) situation? 3) Do I need a 2S or 3S for that motor/gear on a CA Yak, JW Extra, or JW E-Sledge? What capacity if I don't really care to fly for 15 minutes. 6 or 8 minutes would be OK... 4) What prop for the same set up? I use a GWS 11x8 on the gear box now. 5) Three of the HS-55s, I assume? 6) What's up with the $20 to $30 chargers? If I buy only 2S packs, why not use one of those? I've seen chargers from $29.99 to $500. 7) I have a Hitec Feather Rx. Any reason not to use it? 8) What else needs consideration? OK, let the teaching begin! |
RE: RE: RE: Yak Attack!!
(1) Get a new "D" pinion. Used ones aren't worth messing with, new ones are about $2. It just presses on, very simple operation.
(2) The Castle Creations Phoenix 25 is the ESC of choice, I even use a CC P10 with no problems, but the 25 is just a few bucks more. (3) With a 4100 and D gear, 3S is better. If you are set on using 2S packs, the 5400 would probaly be a better choice. With 2S you will pull more amps, so get the CC P 25. A 3S 1200 pack will work great. The Etecs are running about $38 now, you might find them cheaper. It's gonna take an hour to charge them no matter what size (they all charge at 1C) , so I opt for at least 15 minutes. More flying, less charging. With 2S you might want a 1500~2100 pack. (4) I really like the GWS 12X6, OverSpray likes the 11X4.7 on the same motor....it's just personal preferences. (5) Yep, if you don't use any mixing, 3 is all you need. HS-55 are fine, I like the GWS Pico BB (surprised me, but they have been great little servos) (6) I had a $35 Bel charger. It wouldn't top the pack off if used on 12V supply. A 3S lipo tops off at 12.6V and it didn't have a voltage boost circuit so I had to buy a 15V wal wart to top my packs off. With this added cost, I was close to what an Apache 1500 cost. I bought an Apache and like it. With the combined costs I could have bought an Astro 109 by now. Live and learn. I don't recall any other chargers in the $20~$30 price range. Another point...Lipos are pretty dangerous if not properly charged. The better the charger, the more chance you have of it being of a quality to ensure safety (7) No, it will work just fine! (8) Don't skimp. I know cash is scarce, but with this electric stuff (and as I have found out personally) buy the good stuff right off and use it. I have went down a couple of dead ends (brushed motors w/ brushed ESC, cheapo chargers) that have set me back enough to have paid for good stuff right off. Buy quality equipment and it will last almost forever. Also, it is VERY easy to sell even used equipment if it is quality stuff, if you decide it's not for you. Along the same lines, right now 3S lipo and 4100~4200~4300 Kv Motors (Himax 2015 4100, Razor 350, Razor Micro Heli V2) are the hot ticket. They are perfect for these foamies....if you buy something out of "the hot ticket" range, it might not be as easy to turn. |
RE: RE: RE: Yak Attack!!
You said you will sell the Yak looking like that. I would definitley take it

RE: RE: RE: Yak Attack!!
Wrong thread... I said it took longer to do the scheme on this one than it took to build it. I said I'd sell this one:
