RE: OMP Yak build
mine is measured fromt he rear of wingtube.

RE: OMP Yak build
Ah Oh! guess what? It flew it flew, what a plane. I'm planing on flying it a few more times before I start removing weight from the nose.
My hat's off to OMP and Mike for designing such a nice bird. Blackie |
RE: OMP Yak build
Tell us about the flights, what did you like - dislike if anything.

Mine came in at 7.35lbs with a ST-90. With no weight added it balances at 1" behind the wing tube. The battery is behind the wing tube. I might move it to the front of the wing tube because there are ways I could lighten up the front a little. I could get rid of the Super Tigre heavy muffler, lighter throttle servo and lighter wheels.

RE: OMP Yak build
How's it fly on the ST 90, I was looking at getting one and was wondering if that would be enough. I think mine is an older G-90, I don't know if newer ST's are any different.
Thanks Chris |
RE: OMP Yak build
I haven't flown it yet. My G-90 is about 7 years old, but only has about a gallon run through it. Probably not even broken in yet. I had it sitting around, so I thought I would give it a try. If it's not enough power,I will get something else. If I had to buy a new one, I would buy an OS 91FX. I hope to fly it sometime next week.
Thanks, Craig |
RE: OMP Yak build
I'll be taking off work tomorrow so I can get in some more flights. To soon right now for me to give reports but once I've flown it a bit I'll give a report.

RE: OMP Yak build
Well guys My plane is going to be out of commision for a while. Just noticed the crank shaft is bent on the Saito, so I'll be sending it in for repair.
Must have happened when it went down with my AW Edge. Blackie |
RE: OMP Yak build
Wish me luck! I'm off to test hop mine this morning. Winds are a little strong, but I can't wait any longer. Got the Magnum .91XLS running pretty well. What a nice engine. Never had to touch the low end needle. Idles prefectly at around 2200 with a 15x4W prop. Top end right now with it is about 10K. It should pick up a little as it breaks in more. Flight report when I get back!

I have a new best plane! All I can say is, WOW!. What a great flying plane this thing is. It was pretty windy, and by the time I got in a couple of flights, it was blowing too hard to continue. But I got enough flying in to tell that my other planes are gonna see some serious hangar time. I thought it would be hard to beat the OMP 40 size Edge, but incredibly, OMP did it with this one. Three clicks of up trim was all it took. Hovered effortlessly. Loops in it's own length WITHOUT flaps. With them, it eats the tail! KE required no coupling that I could tell, but the wind was blowing dead across the runway, so it tended to push the plane toward me all the time. At extreme rudder throw, it tucked to the belly a little, but nowhere near as much as my UCD 46. Flat spins upright and inverted looked great. I tried a couple of elevators, no wing rock, but I'm not good at those yet. Still working on harriers, too, though it did seem very easy to control. The only problem I had was getting the blasted thing to land! It just wanted to keep flying. Finally got my throttle trim low enough to get it on the ground. I checked it when I got back to the pits -- 1600RPM! I don't know how the Magnum kept ticking over, but it did. BTW, the Magnum .91 XLS works great on this plane. Still not broken in all the way, but hovers were at half throttle, pullout was excellent, and it never hiccupped at all.
Needless to say, I'm excited about the Yak. Now, when is OMP going to come out with a .60 size profile Katana? The .40 size one will be great. I can only imagine what a .60 size one would be like. Some pics from the field.... |
RE: OMP Yak build
I am glad to see your maiden went so well. That is a gorgeous plane

RE: OMP Yak build
Great Job. I love to hear success stories. I am pleased to hear that the magnum 91 has the power. I like Magnum. I have them in planes that I dont need power. I have not used one in a 3D pane. I think Magnum is one of the most underrated engines out there.
Where is Crestview Fl. |
RE: OMP Yak build
Crestview is up in the panhandle, about 50 miles east of Pensacola. It is the county seat for Okaloosa county, home of Eglin Air Force Base. We have a great club of about 50 members, 10-15 very active, but almost no one else that flies 3D. I'm having to learn by trial and error. Sure would be nice to be able to watch and learn from guys like the Memphis gang. Hopefully one day I'll make it to a Pro Bro get together....

RE: OMP Yak build
Try the zinger pro 15-6 on your mag 91 xls. It spools up faster and has about the same amount of pullout power. There wont be that 1/2 sec throttle lag in pullout and waterfalls. Flew mine yesterday with it and liked it a lot. Still cant get rid of the wing rock in mine, I have tried forward cg, more aft cg. The more forward cg made it rock less, but I dont like the idea of 5 oz of lead on the nose for just a little wing rock, now there does seem to be a spot where it is almost in a hover that doesnt wing rock but I guess Im just not good enough to keep it there forever, my little OMP edge just spoiled me I guess in harriers,It has allways beeen rock solid. You might think about drilling the exhaust outlet out a size or 2, I did and I think it helped, also take the baffle out if you havent allready, mines good and broke in and it will hover at about 30-35% throttle

RE: OMP Yak build
Seems on my Saito 100 the 15X6 is the most popular prop, the short time I did fly the plane before sending the engine in for repair it performed great on that prop.
Smallfly, I read over on the ucando thread where mixing in spoilerons may solve that wing rock problem, might want to give that a try. I am guessing that means giving a small % of up ailerons with your elevator. Blackie |
RE: OMP Yak build
I'll give that prop a try. I really didn't notice any spool-up problems with the 15x4 APC. Spool-down, however, was pretty long. It took over 2 seconds for it to wind back down. How much did you drill out the exhaust, and how much difference did it make?
I also tried the APC 16x4 on the ground. Peak RPM was around 9200, but spool-up and down was slow. It seemed to stall the engine if I slammed the stick to full throttle. Mike from OMP recommended that prop, and it may do pretty well with a tuned pipe. After the engine breaks is more, I may try one out. My harriers need a LOT of work. I'm still really nervous flying a plane around in that attitude. Confidence will come with experience, I hope... Now that the time has changed, I can go out after work and get some flying in, Now, if I could just find a 3D mentor....... |
RE: OMP Yak build
Mine wing rocks going into the harrier but soon levels out to a rock solid harrier. I am just loving this plane more and more every time i fly it.
|
RE: OMP Yak build
I have tried and normally use a 50% spoileron mix in harriers with this plane, I may go to 70%+ to try to dump the lift on the wing
I havent tached anything after drilling the muffler just felt better. I drilled it out to the next drill bit size that would be just a little bigger. One interesting thing I noticed at toledo was that thunder tiger is coming out with a 91 2 stroke that looked real nice, It had a huge (long) muffler center section and the outlet was almost the same size as the carb barrel. He stated around 169 when it comes out, looked real good quality wise but several more months down the road |
RE: OMP Yak build
Hey guys thanks for the great feedback on the Yak. Check the center position of the ailerons and make sure they aren't tucked down somewhat during harriers. Also typically a nose heavy plane will rock more on hariers. I don't use spoilerons on my setup even though I have a three way switch programmed for it already. Middle position is no mixing and down gives me flaperons and up gives me spoilerons. I do use that setting on elevators as the plane drop really flat and quickly. That's really fun but you have to transition to harrier quickly to arrest the deceent rate. Way fun!
I like the 16-4 a lot on the OS .91 with stock pipe. It seems to work better for me than the 15-6 as it doesn't cavitate at all during hovers or tail sllides. The 15-6 will cavitate a lot more. Mike |
RE: OMP Yak build
Would someone please post some close up pictures of a Saito 100 mouted in the nose. I'm having trouble understanding exactly how to put the hardwood mounts in with respect to the plywood doublers?

RE: OMP Yak build
Flew mine three more times this afternoon. This is a really fun plane. There was a steady 7-10mph wind and I flipped it into a knife edge and it just sat there, hardly moving forward at all. No coupling at all. It looked like a knife edge hovers. It's amazing how little airspeed is needed to keep this thing in the air in knife edge. I tried a few elevators and it was rock solid all the way down. Absolutely no wing rock. I can't hover worth a darn, but I was able to hold it for almost a minute in the wind.
Not a completely successful day, as I lost the muffler on the first flight. Throttle was surging and had to make three passes to get it down. On the last pass, the engine died and I had to glide it in. Wasn't too familiar with this condition and ended up dropping it in from about 3 feet. No damage except for a skinned up chin! Found the muffler and put in two more uneventful flights. Can't wait to fly this one in calmer conditions. |
