What kind and size cans are you guys using for your pipes? I am going to make one for a 46 fx,40 fx, 40 fp, and a Webra 40. I have a buddy that is going to Tig weld them for me. It should be lighter. stronger, and look better as well. I didnt think he could weld on stuff that thin but he showed me that he could weld on a Pepsi can so I argued no further.....John

Also.....Where can I find some 1/4'' aluminum tubing? I was thinking about looking on my wifes lawn chair but Im not sure what size that is.................John

I was looking for some 1/4" aluminum tubing to make some home-made tail braces for my much abused heli. I got it at the hardware store under the refrigeration supplies section..I think they called it refrigeration tubing.

If you can't find any easily, I'll give ya one of the ill-fated tail braces. PM me the address.

Theres usually some tubing in the K&S rack at the hobby shop. Use either 1/4 inch or 5/16 inch for your exhaust stinger. I also found some tubing in the K&S rack that is really close to the inner/outer diameter of the macs headers. you can extend your inlet pipe into the can similar to an ultrathrust muffler.

The medium sized mousse cans (herbal essences, rave mousse, etc) 6-10 fl oz work great for the 40 sized engines. Remeber that the weight listed on the can only means how much product is in the can, not the can size. One manufacturer will say 6 oz, and the next will say 8.5, and its the same can. Rave is the cheapest of the mousse cans, at a whoppin $1.69 a can. Another great place to find them is at auto parts store. Outlaw fuel injector cleaner (which you can use as an excuse to buy a couple, one for your car, and one for the wifes, cause youre thinking about her engine :D) is a great can to use. Kills two birds with one stone, and your car will like it too.

Tom told me what a blast he had at your field Saturday. Sorry I wasnt able to go along with him, I was down in FL. But I'm going to do my darndest to get out there next go around. What did ya think of his force 1 video plane with the mousse can on it? That thing rips across the sky.

yeah it was great, we had a great time having him. u can also feel free to come any time u wish. how far are u guys from raliegh as i will be moving up there in about 2 years and don't feel lie ahving to find new place to fly, if u aren't to far i might come out there.

It would be a haul from Raleigh to fly here, about 75 miles each way, depending on what part of Raleigh. Do you have to move to Raleigh? Wouldnt ya like to move to GSO instead :D Thanks for the invite, and youre more than welcome to come up to our place and fly. As Tom said, our field is a lil tighter than yours, but you'd still have a ball.

One other place to get alot of cans, is to take a box to wherever you get your haircut. Ask them to throw all their hairspray and mousse cans into the box, and youll come by every couple weeks or so to empty it.

For my TT46, and ST45, I use a can that 6.5" in length by 1.75" in diameter.

for my 40fp, I am using a can that 6" lenght by 1.5" in diameter

all stingers are 1/4 O.D. (outisde diamter) and my inlet pipe are 3/4" O.D."

As for stinger tubing, I use 1/4" copper refrigator tubing I found at Lowes in the plumbing department, at Lowes, they sell it by the roll around 40ft, which is way to much, are you can buy it packaged up in 12" sections.

I am running moosecan on every 2 stroke I own.

Wingspan99 and I got some great tach and tuning info on my TT36 heli motor at lunch. I have an 8.5oz Rave mousse can, with a 1 1/2 inlet pipe (only goes into the can about 1/4 inch). The macs header is full length. Has a 5/16" stinger that extends straight out the rear of the pipe (curved neck at the rear of the plane)

Stock heli pipe was consistently turning 12-12.3 k.

Mousse can pipe was yielding 14k consistent with a peak of 14.3k, with awesome transition. Odd thing was that I had too much muffler pressure under full throttle, and was leaning the engine out to the point of flameout. Running no pressure, it is great in any attitude.

Now I just have to figure out which can to run on my OS91 fx. I have the header and a large volume (16 oz hairspray) metallic red can, but I'm not sure if I could handle the ribbing that the "BIG SEXY HAIR" can will bring.

Any well stocked hobby shop should carry the aluminum tubing. It is significantly lighter than the copper. Give it a shot mgrambling.

check post#50 that is the size dimension on my can that I am using. Dave McDonald and I have done a lot of work on the ST90 trying to figure out the right size can.

But if you take the cubic volume that we all know that works on a 46 size motor, and then double it for a 90size motor, you come up with the size can, that I used on post 50.

Throttle responce is perfect, my power is down a little from what everybody else is getting, but my RPMs were tached with 3 differant tachs, and I am not lying about my RPMs, I just don't think my motor is completely broken in yet. So hopefully my RPMs will come up in about another gallon. I know the ST90 take some time to break in.

Oh if your not interested in building a moosecan for a OS91FX. Wilson hobby in Kennett, MO already has them made, and ready to go for a 91FX. He is running a moosecan on his 91FX on a U-Can-Do and vertical pull out is unbelievable. He also has them for just about every 46 made, and a OS160FX

But hopefully all the homework Dave McDonald, I and others will save some people some headaches. I have a lot of time on this muffler setup, and I spent about $60 trying to figure it out. Dave McDonald and I shot emails back and forth like crazy compairing notes. I am waiting for warmer weather to try this thing out.

If you don't like the printing on the can you can cover it with Monocote. I've done this before to match the can to an airplane. It may take two layers to cover. Tom

Spiff, the best source for your inlet tube is the piece of Mac's header that you cut off from your new pipe.........well thats the only inlet tube that I was able to find.

JMulder, most of your LHS's carry the K&S tubing. I buy a 36" piece of the 1/4" tubing for a $2.00. Can make many-a-stinger with that $2.00 piece. And I dont think it matters that much how long he stinger is. I usually try to make mine as long as I need for the plane it goes on. For a PBF I make them shortand turn them down and run it through the coroplast. Then I flare the end a little , just enough to keep a tie-wrap from coming off. Keeps the top of your PBF really clean. As for fun fly planes I usually point them out a little straighter to keep them from getting bent.

A good trick that I found to bend your stingers is to insert as many small tie-wraps as you can possible get into you stinger tube, then you can bend it gently without kinking it. Then you pull out the tie-wraps. Thats a little easier than melting solder in and out of them.

John, yes the 1/4" tubing works good for anything .46 and smaller. Here is a picture of a mousse can covered with monocote to match my airplane. Tom

You can also paint the can with rustoleum spray paint. I normally use black.

is there any way to strip the "paint/decals/writing"off the can then polish the aluminum?
