All,
I was thinking about getting into racing. What do I need to do, or get, or fly? Should I get a fast sport plane like a Patriot or something so I am used to flying fast, or what?

Buy a Thunder Tiger PRO.40 for your engine ($70-$80?). Buy a Predator Quickee 500 ARF ($129?)). Both are available through Horizon Hobby or even your local hobby shop. Get yourself some PowerMaster 15% fuel. I assume you have a 4-8 channel radio? Glow ignitor? Starter? Misc. tools to assemble?

One more thing! Since your so close to the best place on the planet to get into racing. Head out to the SpeedWorld facility. They have a permanent 3 pole pylon course set up for use. You may have to join, but if you could get hooked up with Jim Allen, Gary Schmidt or better yet Lee Ulinger they could really get you hooked.

I would check with the local clubs, in your case probably the Speedworld club, and see what they are racing. Then get equipment that matches their rules. As far as entry level 40 size Q500 goes Randy is correct. A TT Pro, Predator or the new Viper (if you want an ARF) would be the way to go.

Oops, forgot about the ARF Viper (Great Planes?). I believe you can use standard size servos? Most racers that fly JR use the mini's... 3121's, DS3421's on elevators and aileron... 341 for throttle. That's pretty much up to you though.
Remember, this type Q500 has a throttle. So, you can always fly around 3/4 throttle to get use to the speed... Don't be afraid of it..

The rudder achieved buy using a mix on the V-Tail. Very simple to set up.

Jake,
There are a bunch of great guys there at SpeedWorld to help you out. Just email/call Jim Allen or Gary Schmidt and they can get you started. It would be great to see you there in AMA 424 next month.
I started there also, and had a lot of fun then. I will be back next month and looking forward to kicking some butts this time. After all, I learned most of it from Jim Allen, chasing him around the course back then.
Let me know if I can be of any assistant to you.
As for the servos... use what Randy B. prescribed or go with all Hitec stuff from 555 Mini Receivers to Mini HS 225 and HS85 Servos. Hope this help.
