Default How to draw circles around a spinner?

I've seen nice warbirds with black spinner cones and white circles around it. What are they for?!?!

Anyway, I like them and they look perfect for my plane, does anyone have any idea how to draw these circles?!

Well, the way I've always done it is to cut a tapered mask. It usually takes a few attempts to get it right. I write down the measurements so I can zero it in.

For example, I might make one 1/4" wide that tapers to 0" and is 6" long. Then I wrap it around the spinner and go from there.

To spray it, I mount it to a stud and chuck it in my drill and airbrush it. Then I put it in the oven and bake it. A nice baked enamel finish will hold up to your starter just fine.

about 200 degrees for an hour or so. Let it cool naturally. Garnish to taste.

ok. Take a piece of masking tape about 6 inches long. Tape it down to a piece of glass. Cut it so that it is a long wedge. Spray on the spiral color on your spinner. When it's dry, wrap the tape around the spinner and spray the second color. Remove the tape and you'll have a spiral around your spinner.

Just finished the spinner on my Byron P-51 with a spiral pattern. The documentation I got from the owner of the full scale had instructions on how he did it. With the four blade prop start midway between the prop blades at base of spinner and mark 2" intervals toward spinner tip. Repeat on oppisate side at base of spinner. In other gaps between blades, start 1" from base of spinner and mark 2" intervals towards the tip. "Connect the dots" to make the spiral move rearward when running. You will have to scale down the 2" and 1" dimension to the scale you are building. Mask the spinner with 3-M Fine line tape. 1/8" would probably work the best for smaller scales. I wrapped the tape around the spinner to connect the marks and it worked really well.Be sure and paint your base color before measuring and marking. Good luck.

Scott
