Dynaflite Super Decathlon vs Lanier Taylorcraft
I was wondering what opinions there were on these two kits.
I have a G38 floating around that I had earmarked for a 1/3 Sig Spacewalker that I had ordered. Now (3 months after ordering), I have been told that Sig won't have any Spacewalkers till at least end of April.
I am a big fan of both the Super Decathlon and Taylorcraft and was wondering if either one would suit the G38 and if so, what experience people had with these kits.
I'm not big on grossly overpowered models because I like scale-ish aerobatics.
Any recommendations?
Thanks in advance

RE: Dynaflite Super Decathlon vs Lanier Taylorcraft
Ari,
I considered the same question and chose the Decathlon. Can't say anything about the Taylorcraft, I have no experience with it. I just had to make the choice. The SD is a nice building project, but it is quite a bit of work. Not difficult, just a lot of parts gluing and carving. I enjoyed it! I run a Quadra 42 in mine and it performs quite well. The G38 should be a very good match. If you choose the SD, be careful of your weight. The SD can build heavy, particularly tail heavy, even with your big gasser planned for the nose. When you are done though, it is one very nice flying bird. Very rewarding of the effort.
You likely will not go wrong with either choice.
Have fun!

RE: Dynaflite Super Decathlon vs Lanier Taylorcraft
Hi Bedford,
Thanks for the reply.
I was thinking along the same lines. I already have a Taylorcraft (ARF) which I really like and am building a 33% Decathlon from Hoststler plans.
I was hoping to get something that would be easier to transport and the split wing setup on the Dynaflite SD suits me quite well.
Regards
Ari

RE: Dynaflite Super Decathlon vs Lanier Taylorcraft
I finally had a very brief note from Lanier saying that the G38 was too heavy for the Taylorcraft.
So far, nothing from Dynaflite.
I'd be grateful for further opinions or comparisons between the two planes.
TIA
Ari

The G38 would not be too heavy for the Lanier T-Craft. I had a US 41 in mine before I replaced it with an OS BGX. Both engines fly the airplane very well but I ditched the US 41 because it was hard to start. The G38 would be a perfect choice for this plane IMO..........RS

Hi Russmall,
Beautiful plane!!!
This is what I got from Lanier:

From: Lanier RC

To: [email protected]
Subject: G38
The G38 is too heavy for the taylorcraft. It works nicely on out Stinger 120 kit.
Thanks,
*****************************
I had also thought that the G38 would do quite nicely, or a Moki 1.8 which I also have but have fitted in a 1/5 Super Chipmunk.
I guess the lighter the motor, the better the plane flies though.
How did your TC perform in slow flight with the US41?
These two engines should be similar weight.
I have another Taylorcraft which is from Minicraft Thailand. It's essentially the same plane as the H9 Taylorcraft but with a different colour scheme. It's shown in my avatar. It flies on a G26 and performs very well. Could do with somewhat more grunt though.
Regards
Ari
