Default Engine Storage

When storing engines off the airframe that will not be used for awhile, are there any problems of storing them is a vacuumed sealed bag? Has anyone done this or is this going to far.

Never tried the vacuum bag for engine storage. I soak all my engines in a coffee can filled with kerosene. A Clarence Lee suggestion I believe. They wont rust and despite some peoples concerns I have never had a rubber o-ring dissolve or gasket disintegrate. Cheap and worry free.

I have heard of the Coffee can method that fokker20planes describes - it is suppose to be the method of choice by professionals - if you have the room and lots of leak proof containers.

Personally I put a lot of after run in the engine and then use the zip lock bag - no problems in 2 years and it take up a lot less room than the Coffee Cans.

All a matter of choice and personal situations.

I've never thought of the kerosene soaking, and it wont destroy packings and such? Wow. Right now I have one of them in a zip-lock bag myself soak in Marvel Mystery Oil. I have about two more that I want to store right now and was just not sure of the right method.

Thanks for your inputs

Airdale CPO, unless you are sure your bag is absolutely air tight, don't use Marvel Mystry Oil else you will wind up with a bound up engine. I've stored engines in both kerosene and plain old 30 weight mototr oil for years with no problem. Right now I have an old OS 4 cycle with the exposed rocker arms which has been stored in 30 weight oil since the mid 70's and it is still like new. kerosene is also an excellent cleaning fluid for engines that have been crashed in sand or dirt.

hi

what I have used for many years successfully is a mixture of marvel mystery oil and transmission fluid 50/50. remove plug and fill engine with mix turn prop about a dozen of so times and put in zip lock bag with some of mix. works great.

happy flying

Rodney, when you use the 30 weight for storage, do you leave the carb on and submerse the complete engine in it in a can or do you put in a ziplock bag? Thanks.
