Mounting Motor on P51...
Afternoon,
I have seen many ways that an engine is mounted on the firewall of a plane. When the lines are drawn to find the "center" of the firewall, I have seen both lines centered left to right and top to bottom, off center top to bottom, and off center left to right. So my question is, how do I find the point on the firewall where I need to mount the center of the motor drive?
Thank you,
Andy

RE: Mounting Motor on P51...
1) Does the firewall have built in right thrust?
2) Does the firewall have built in down thrust?
If no right thrust is called for, then the vertical line is straight down the center. The horizontal line is more difficult to place on the P-51. If the plane has just a half upper cowl, then you can bolt the engine to the engine mount, put the engine mount against the firewall, and mark the mounting hole locations. If the plane has a whole cowl, then you almost have to have a side view of the plan or mount the cowl first, place the engine plus mount to the side of the cowl so the spinner is lined up with the cowl and mark locations.
In anycase, here is the engine offset calculator: [link]http://www.lcrcc.net/offset_calc.htm[/link]
