Default Covering methods

Hi everyone,

I am new to the hobby and am doing some research on model kits, building methods etc. My ultimate goal is to build a scale war bird, I don't know if I will start with a complete kit, or go with plans and get a kit cutter to make the parts. I have a few years of building balsa models, but I have never radio controlled one.

I am a little confused about the different covering methods that are available for balsa models. What is available, what is the best, how are each applied. Is there any information on-line that I can read about each method?

I do feel that the colors of MonoKote do not accurately reproduce the colors of a warbird, so to me painting is a better option. What should be put under the paint?

Thanks

Dave

Default RE: Covering methods

Models with fully sheeted surfaces can be covered with fiberglass and painted. If there are lightening holes or open bays between the wing ribs, you can use iron on fabric such as
Nelson Hobby http://www.nelsonhobby.com/covers.html
or Super Coverite http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXB237&P=0

OR

use Sig Koverall and dope, then paint http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXFG20&P=0

My brother just finished a Super Sportster 60 using Koverall, Dope, and paint.

There is a book by Harry Higley called "There Are No Secerts". It's an excellent treatise on covering. Start with that.
