i need a .46 size engine and do not know which to get an evolution or O.S.. is there any difference in these engines? is one better than the other, or does it depend on which plane you want?

I can't speak for Evolution Engines as I've never had one. However, I am (almost) totally an O.S. engine owner. I have an O.S. .46 LA and two O.S. .46AXs. The LA is a good sport engine, easy and reliable to operate and reasonably priced. The AX is an easy and reliable engine to operate with quite a bit more power then the LA. O.S.'s quality and reliability is unquestioned, in my opinion. When I decide to buy another glow engine, because I have been so happy with O.S engines, it would be difficult for me to decide to buy anything but an O.S.
Don't miss-construe this, I'm not saying other engines aren't as good and in some cases there may be engines which are even better. All I'm saying is I have had excellent results with O.S.

Bretd123 asked for opinions on Evolution and O.S. engines. I'm sure he would listen to opinions on Magnum and Thunder Tiger! As I said above, I am (almost) totally O.S. I do have two Magnum 4 strokes, which I think are made from the original O.S. 4 stroke castings. I also have one Saito engine, but have little experience with it. Shortly I will own a Zenoah G-26. All I was attempting to state was; I have had very good experience with O.S. engines.
I actually feel for any product to have made it to the market today, its' quality MUST be on a par with the competition. If the quality isn't there, it just won't make it!
When people posting to R/CU are concerned they will be flamed for having a different opinion, this negates the validity of any opinions given on a subject! It is also of no help to the original poster.

If this is your first engine and money not an issue , go with the OS
Evolutions can be hit and miss. If you get a good one , you`ll be impressed with it. A bad one well drive you nuts with deadsticks .
One good thing that Evolution has going for them , their customer service is second to none .

After owning and hearing alot about Evolutions,no more evolutions for this guy! Seems to me that thier primarily designed for easy starting.......and thats about it! Some guys have no problems with them, but MANY other including myself have problems with them leaning themselves out in flight causing deadstick. Flown level they work nice, but during manuevers and stuff many of them seem to have a fuel draw problem. Not to mention my evolution .61 is the worst transitioning (from idle to full throttle) I've ever seen,no matter how or who tries to tune it. I was going to try crimping the exhaust pipe to give the fuel tank more pressure, but I'm not even wasting my time on that evolution anymore. I'm swaping it out of my sukhoi for some(anything) else. I'm either selling it or putting it in a non-aerobatic plane.
O.S.'s on the other hand.........Heck,in my short career here so far,I've never really seen a bad one yet! About all of them idle perfect, transfer great and never hesitate during the hardest manuevers or throttle changes. If your going 2-stroke and can afford the extra $$$ for an O.S.......do it!!!!

I own one os (55ax) and one evo
The evo likes to turn slightly higher rpm starts (a litle ) easier.
BTW: evos a known for "walking needles" remove the needle valve completely and bend the little bar towards the center a bit on that will solve MOST of the lean issues other than that it will be tank placement something to do with fuel lines/carb

I found this rule to be accurate in RC. You get what you pay for. I own Magnum, GMS, Tower and OS engines. I mainly have OS because they run right out of the box. GMS and Tower run great after you figure them out, may be diffrent issue on each. Magnum runs strong but has a transition issues. It is worth it to me just to spend a few more bucks and have what you really want-it's like paying for insurance. Just my two cents

Magnum runs strong but has a transition issues.
I found that also on the XL's, but I have a couple of the new XLS models an have no trouble at all with transition on these now.

I do have an XLS 46 and still have the problem. The carbs are just not the quality of OS, but that doesn't mean they won't run well and fly planes well. I run a couple 52 Mag 4 strokes on 40 size planes that i like and they were a real bargin. My GMS 47 is a real animal in a fun fly type plane, had to mess with it to make it run good. Thats the part I elect not to do anymore.

Mine are the .15 xls I run on sig wonders. They are a big improvment over the .15 xl's that were on them. The new 15's are blue heads with a different bore an stroke an the carbs on the xls's are completely different than the old style engines. Mine both ran great right outta the box, I thought they transed as good as my O.S.'s IMHO

My Feedback: (21)
I just got an EVO .61 that was stuck in a tree for 4 months. After cleaning it up (getting rid of some of the rust), it started up and has run fine since. I have had trouble with some EVo on various trainers that my students have. Mostly mid-range transition. On one of the trainers, I just had him remove the Evo and use one of my old OS 40 FP - have not had any trouble withthat engine at all. Being an old-timer, I've owned many brands. The only one that I ended up junking was a Tower .40. IT never ran right. I still love OS engines, but I am not afraid to use other ones, both 2 Stroke and 4 Stroke.

Heck, I'll even defend their LA engines to the death.... I think the LA's are a lot better little engine than most will give them credit for.
I also have their new 46 an 55 ax's, easy starting, no dead sticks, will probably outlast me I'm sure...
But I must say that the new little Magnum .15XLS's I have are as good as any of my O.S.'s I have ever owned.
