Default Wheels/Main Gear

First, are these wheels too small for this plane? (2 1/2" wheels) -

Second, *Edit* - Should the wheels have this much negative camber or should I straighten them?

Thanks.,

A little toe-in helps the plane track better. Those wheels are fine. If you find your airplane can't roll in the grass at your field you may want to use larger wheels, but I know a guy who flies .90 size planes with 2" wheels just to save weight.

Wheel size really depends on what surface you will be flying from. If the runway is hard (concrete, asphalt, etc.) the 2.5" wheels or even 1.5" for that matter will work.

If you are flying off some tall grass fields, 3.5 or 4" wheels are not out of the question! They may look goofy at that size, but you will be able to take off :-)

You photo doesn't show toe in, it shows negative camber. Toe in is when the leading edge of the tire/tread is closer to the centerline of the vehicle (any vehicle) than the trailing edge.

Thanks for correcting me Charlie.....

Back to the original question:
Should I correct the negative camber so the wheels are straight? -

Straight vertically, but a little toe-in will help tail draggers track straight. I have never heard/seen/read that toe-in helps with tricycle gear.

The gear on trainers especially is so springhy that positive camber (bottoms of the wheels closest) ends up being negative camber under the weight of the plane. I set mine so that it is neutral with the plane at rest.

What he said, LOL!

I usually bounce mine is such that the wheels get a chance to try a series of positions.

Hoppy landings,

I have an Avistar as well, but have the Wire landing gear on it. IMHO, it won't matter for long. The first hard landing and you will be bending them back toward vertical any way. Between every flight, I reset them just to keep the tail from coming close to the ground. But, like I said, I have the wire type.

Something I forgot to mention....

I replaced the wire gear with 1 pc aluminum gear....

Also I got rid of that cheap plastic spinner that came with the kit for an aluminum one. The plastic one cracked while 'running in' the engine... very cheap design.
