Default Looking for a pilot.

I finaly reached the point where I need to find a pilot for my Contender.

I kind of like the look of a jetpilot. Now where do I get a 1/6 scale jetpilot? With oxygen mask and visor if possible. Williams Bros. jetpilots are dorky. Hanger 9s' are OK. No visor though. MGAs cost a fortune and I would probably have to cut the poor guy in half to fit.

So, who else makes a decent jetpilot bust???

Model Airplane News had an article late last year on how to modify the look of the current plastic pilots (author felt they looks to dorky as well) using some modelling clay, some paint and some imagination.

The results were a completely different looking pilot and it didn't seem too hard to do. (demo pilot in article started with the standard, then added different foirehead, added mustache, sideburns etc. He ended up with a British WWII pilot)

I put Woodstock (from Peanuts fame) in mine, less work

If you are interested in the article, let me know and I'll check to see which issue it was in.

Thanks for the help. I saw a similar article online. The lady who wrote it made a German pilot for some sort of WW1 airplane.

Unfortunately, I am not that artistic. I don't think I would end up with a human looking figure.

I ordered a couple of pilots. So, I will at least give painting a try.

Now Woodstock gives me an idea. If my pilot venture does not work out. I wonder if my three-year old would miss his Snoopy.

See, now that's where I have one up on you. I used my own Woodstock (not that there's anything wrong with that ...)

I have a picture located at : Woodstock (TF Contender)

Hey Nuker!

You should tell the story of Woodstock's encounter with a thunderstorm....

Hey Jim,

Woodstock ejected safely, the plane was re-built in a week and flies great (flew it just this weekend). It stays home now if there is a risk of lightening anywhere in the northern hemisphere

so how's your rebuilt combat from last year's "encounter" coming along

In that it is rebuildable, it's coming along much better than yours obviously. Just a few more Nuker servo 'bits' to extract from the lead noseweight

Well at least Team Lil' Nuker is back in the sky.

Lil' Nuker #1 RIP but the name lives on in Lil' nuker #2 (5 lbs of lead in the nose of the plane is illegal this year eh?)

OK back to the pilot post....

Default The Best Pilot!

Check out your local toy stores/hobby stores and see if they have Blue Box Toys Elite Force Aviators. A local toy store near me is selling them for $29.99. Awesome detail!!!! Here is the link to BBI.

Thanks for all the help!

I did look at the Blue-Box pilots. They just look too good to cut off at the shoulders. Not to mention the $30. I did get one of them Blue-Box pilot helmets ($9). I will stick the helmet on a generic pilot head. That should look pretty good. Total cost = $15.

Hello Deadmeat,

Why would you have to worry about cutting up the figure. Can they weigh that much?? They can't be more than 10 ozs!! IMHO I would put the figure in the plane and just balance it with the pilot !!!

The weight is not an issue. Unfortunately the cockpit is not large/deep enough to fit a full figure (this could be misinterpreted by dirty minds ). I only have enough room for a pilot bust. The receiver sits right under the pilot.

Here is a picture of my Contender. I just have to show it off.

Default Nice Job

You did a really nice job in covering your plane. It looks really good. I hope my Mid-Star comes out nearly that nice. Oh and good luck on the pilot figure, I'm going through th same decision making process. I think since the Mid-Star isn't really military or anything, a Jack-in-the Box Antena ball. should compliment my color scheme well. Although I really do like the Woodstock/Snoopy ideas.

Nuker,
I've made up cheap and quick military jet pilots using the williams bros. military bust, and then triming the visor to fit inside the opening on the helmet...then adding some micro balloons or putty and a heavy wire with string wraped around it for the oxygen mask. I have one that was recently 'ejected' that i'll take a picture of and post tonight for some ideas.

Default william's bros pilot

Here's a picture of the modified williams bros pilot i described above. I also turned the head a little to add character.
