Default Tuning engine

As a newbie at buggies I would like to know how do I understand that the engine is tuned correctly?

Also can I change the fuel tank in my PCR with the violator one?

Default RE: Tuning engine

When the throttle is wide open (we call it WOT), you should see a thin blue stream of smoke from the pipe. You don't see any smoke then your main needle (HSN) is too lean and you need to adjust it slightly counter-clockwise (1 hour at a time). If you see a lot of smoke or if it has the nasty "boggin" sound at WOT, then the HSN is too rich. You adjust this with a 1 hour turn clockwise. Run the buggy some more (needs to be at least 30 seconds for the new setting to take effect).

For the low speed needle (LSN), I adjust mine with my idle times. I put my Idle Set Screw (ISS) so that it has a 1mm gap (works good for most engines). Then I clean out the engine and count how many seconds it will idle for. I run 20% nitro and I let it idle for 20 seconds before it loads up and dies. If it idles too long the LSN is too lean, richen the LSN (counter clockwise) an 1/8th of a turn and try again. If it loads up and dies before 20 seconds has passed it's too rich, so you lean the LSN (clockwise) 1/8th of a turn. Remember to run the car for 30 seconds between adjustments. Also if the carb isn't fully unloaded, it will change your idle times. I usually give it a shot of WOT followed by full brake and then start counting... one one thousand, two one thousand...

This won't give you a perfect tune, but it gets you running pretty good. As time goes on, you will learn different things that will help you tune better.

Also the stock carb on that Hyper engine is pretty hard to tune. Upgrading the carb makes this process much easier.

You can make any tank you want fit, but it ai't a straight swop. And your engine is tuned when it doesn't hesitate as you open the throttle right up and you still see smoke coming out. The blue smoke is a good sign.

Thanks for your replies guys.
I need to play with all needle's functions?
Rob what do you mean by saying ''clean out the engine''?
Can you give me a site to buy the OS 20E carb.
Also would it be difficult to set it up on my own?
I will try to tune my engine tomorrow and let you know accordingly.

Doing the carb upgrade is easy. Getting your hands on a #20E sounds like it's pretty difficult in the UK. One of the other guys had called like 40 hobby shops in the UK something. If you have a freind of someone that has an old OS Max .21 RG, the carb is the one you need (20e). That's how I got mine. I lucked out and a guy here had one and sold it to me for $20. I think he still has one laying around but shipping to the UK is prohibative from what I hear.

It aint that prohibative if it's a bargain. $15 tops one way for an Item that small.

I just got off the phone with him. He said the two he has are junk and aren't worth anything. I take it the needles are worn out or something.
