Default looking to the future...

I see many threads about engines, this vs that, etc., but it's a bit hard to make a great deal of sense out of them, due to the many conflicting opinions, and varying costs, so I wanted to make this thread, which I feel may be useful to other people...(especially hyper 21 8 port owners)...I can sum it up in a couple of simple questions...

1) If I add a boost bottle to the hyper 8 port, will it make my engine perform as good as or even better than a more expensive engine?
2) If I add a boost bottle and an OS 20E carb to my hyper 8 port, will I have a competitive racing engine?

or

3) Should I be thinking about getting a better engine full stop, and if so, what would anyone recommend as a decent 'second' engine for around 200 bucks....?

Hey J',now you started another thread about engines.[sm=drowning.gif]
Things will allways be the same, those who tried a few engines will give you info on those engines but you won't be able to say if it's better than other engines that they did not tried out. This is good and bad, too many engines with good performance. You will see threads of the A engine better than the B,BUT you will see threads with B better than A.Now what?It all comes to tuning and how they were tested. They will last long if tuned well. They will perform well if tuned the right way.
I went to my track last week,a guy there was running the force 8 port and it was fast, runtime around 12mins.I said WOW.I couldn't get him at the straights with the hyper 8 port, only at the turns but cause of better car setup i guess,he had an old inferno 7.5 kit.The thing is he didn't know the temps of his engine so i told him to check them with my infrared gun,and he was working at 350F and mine was at 240F.HE would have said the Force 8 port is a screamer.BUT IS IT?[sm=confused.gif]

1) yes and no, depends on the motor you compare to and how the engine is tuned/looked after/run-in

2) ditto the above

3) Might scrape an OS V-Spec for $20 more money from www.rotor.com.sg

thing is though, some people say that the hyper 8 port is a decent engine when run in and tuned correctly, so ideally, I would like to know if I should even bother thinking about another engine, or whether I should just change the carb and add the boost bottle. Will I even be able to get a significantly better engine for 200 bucks or less??

Sorry for another thread about engines then, but this is not so much a 'what should I buy' thread, as a 'is it worth it to buy' thread.

Thanks for the response Galifrey...let's assume that it is a very carefully run in and properly tuned 8 port, if that helps...

I know what you mean "foxy",i also want to keep my hyper, not because is that fast but just to get the chance to show it off to some guys running rb ws7 II on there first buggy!!![sm=punching.gif]IF I WIN!!!

After i fixed the carb at my hyper as Alex told me,it works just fine without losing tuning for three weeks now.Let's hope it continues this way.
I think there are some guys here that have tested it against other engines and they should be able to give some info to you(and me) about it's performance!!

He wouldnt want it to idle all day. But a strong idle comes into play more than you would think in race situations. When upside down, when on the grid waiting to start a race. When by passing flipped over traffic, etc. etc. You dont want something with a weak idle. I think a good reliable engine out there today that had a strong idle and good amount of power is the LC21B7 and B3. Werks Racing Collari engines. ANd they look cool as heck too. LoL

LMAO

ever heard of teaching granny to suck eggs...

Any car engine should be tunable for a 20 second idle which ought to be more than enough in a race situation..

If it wont idle for 20 seconds and pick up afterwards then something is wrong somewhere..

a boost bootlle will only smooth out the ildle it does not add any performance. You can do what you want but I personally wouldn't put money into an 8port. You are probably better off using the motor to practice and bash and have another motor to race. For $200 there are much much better motors out there that will put the 8 port to shame. Like Skyline said the Werks motors for one. Rb motors, Heck my back up motor is a Sports Work .21 that I bought new on E-bay for $100 and it is more motor then the 8 port.

I have two Hyper 8 ports. Top end is really good, but the torque is lacking. I don't have a boost bottle, so that will probably help a bit. The engines do run hot, and it's true that they do not hold a tune as well as others. Also, the stock carb is not the greatest either, and will not hold a tune for very long. I use mine for practice, and use my p5 for racing. So, for the additional price you would pay for a bottle setup and a new higher quality carb, you might as well get Rossi, RB, etc.

Just my .02

Cool, thanks guys, having seen a v-spec for only $220 on that link galifrey gave me, I think that's the way to go. I'll keep the 8 port for bashing....

VZ-B being Buggy VZ-R being Road

Thank you for the link!!
But they sell the vz-r for S$370($222us) and the vz-b for S$460($277us).
How did Galifrey made it to $217US??
Also what about the vz-r will it be OK as off-road engine on a buggy?

I think (but I'm not sure)...that it (vz-r) is a short stroke, which generally means....er, less torque/more revs, I think... (ok, I'm not really sure, I'll just shut up).
