There are two models available now, the XB8R and the XB8 EC. The R is the base line version and the EC is the top end racing version. The basic construction is identical - same layout and many of the same parts. The EC has more bling, more high end CNC parts, and more adjustability to the suspension. With about $250 in parts you can convert an R to an EC. Less if you don't need the flexibility to the suspension. I have to tell you, I just built this buggy and I can't say enough about the quality of construction. Outstanding.

The XB8R is as close to a compromise as Xray are willing to get, it's made slightly cheaper, using composite chassis braces and centre diff cover, along with carbon fiber radio trays, and somewhat skinnier shock towers.
In my opinion the XB8R needs only the CNC shock towers, TQ arms and CNC center diff cover to be as good as a now discontinued TQ. The TQ (and new EC) also has the CNC braces and radio tray but these make it quite a bit heavier over the carbon fiber, and besides, most Xray drivers are using the composite braces anyway, since they are cheaper to replace and leave a good amount of flex in the chassis.
The XB8R is a bargain if that's what you need, it's got all the Xray quality for a cheaper price, you can then bolt on the parts you think you need, as you see fit.
I think it would take a lot of parts to bring an R up to the level of an EC, but there's no need, the original XB8 was still an outstanding buggy.

I know that we are not talking the TQ but the TQ use to be the top of the line before the EC cam out. OK now I was running the Georgia Championship Series yesterday that Ryan Lopez runs who is factory sponsored by Xray. He said the EC handles MUCH better then the TQ did. Said there is a night and day difference. So I am sure the EC handles much better then the R. But I am sure both are very good buggies. If I had the money to buy a new buggy it would defiantly be the EC.
