Pull starts are just like that.
Treat them well with short tugs and make sure your engine is well primed and tuned and they should last reasonably. Otherwise just get a starter box.

I ran pull starters on all my RC vehicles till I got my buggy. I had very little problems with them but you defiantly have to use the properly. If you use them properly they hold up well. People all the time fuss about STS pull starters and I do not have a problem with them as well.

Is it a new engine? Are you quite new to nitro?
It sounds like its very rich on both needles but we might need a few more details to be sure.

Is there oil/fuel dripping out of the pipe?
It sounds to me though you should start leaning your low speed needle. Do it in small increments of 1/12 turns and see if it starts to get better.
