Confused about diffs
I have an 8ight buggy and decided to fill the diffs w/ diff oil. I used 5,7,3 (F, C, R). My Center and Front diffs seem to be really tough to turn now. They are not smooth like before and seem to bind when turning slowly. If i loosen the diff housing screws the action is smooth but then they leak because the screws arent tight enough. What am i doing wrong? Should they be this hard to turn? I've never used oil in the diffs before. Can anyone offer helpful advice? The gears are fine and i double checked everything but it keep happening. Can you overtighten the screws or do you need it as tight as possible?

RE: Confused about diffs
Is it possible for you to adjust the shims and see if you can prevent the binding? My experience is limited, but adding diff oil has never caused any binding like you described. More resistance, of course, but nice and smooth. The fact that you can back off the tension on the housing screws and the binding goes away suggests it is not the diff oil too. Check those shims I suggest.

RE: Confused about diffs
It should have not done anything as far as I know BUT how much did you fill the diffs with fluid? You are not supposed to fill them all the way to the top. You did not lose the gasket or forget to put it in did you? That could make the mesh way too tight.

yup, sounds like the gaskets may be warn and you need to add 1 or 2, just enough to get'em smooth again. i think the losi diffs are filled almost full, like above the cross pins.

RE: Confused about diffs
I'm assuming the gaskets are the blue paper seals. They are in good shape and the diffs are broken in. I was running the stock grease and decided to change to oil. I redid the diffs this morning. I removed a shim from each cross pin and tightened them just enough for them not to leak. They are not silky smooth, but they dont bind. The resistance is consistent and there is no hard spot when i turn them, although there is still a little vibration, which i hope is normal due to the thicker fluid. Are they supposed to be silky smooth and in no vibration whatsoever? The gears look like new and i dont know what else to do.

RE: Confused about diffs
where is the vibration?
They should be extremely smooth and solid. It took me a while to get mine built well the first few times but now they are all silky and sealed.

RE: Confused about diffs
When i turn them there is vibration. I removed the shims to let the spider gears spread more and reduce the tightness. When i turn them to test for resistance, should i grip the houding and turn the outdrive or should i be holding one outdrive while spinning the other outdrive. When i turn both outdrives, it's real smooth, but when i i turn one and hold the houding is when i get the non-smooth feeling. it's sort of vibrates when it turns like gears meshing. not a lot but then again i dont know how much there should be.

I'm pretty sure you're fine. Probably was a good idea to take those shims out too. The diffs come from the factory with no shims. The only time you should have to shim them is if they're excessively worn. And those spider gears generally last quite a long time from my experience.

Vibration? Would you explain this a little more?
From what I see (besides a vibration?) it sounds normal. There is going to be resistance, thats why the oil is there. You should be fine.
EDIT: Well I got to thinking and I think the vibration your talking about is the gears messing together, which you could call vibrating if your holding the case I guess.
