I am helping a friend try to find an electric speed boat for her husband they live on a lake. She wants to spend around $100 or so. I am into RC airplanes so i dont know much about boats. If anyone has any links or recommendations let me know.

In that price range there isn't much choice beyond 'Toy grade' RTR, HK has some EP boats but they all requires you to buy at least radio system,battery and appropriate charger which raise the price even more. A sail boat could be more interesting on a lake and some ready-to-run comes with radio:
