I've got a .12 glow engine arriving in a few days. Can I just make a simple mount out of steel to mount it in the boat (I do that to hold engines while I break them in)? Or do I need one of the 'quiet' engine mounts?
Also, how do I attatch it to the hull - do I glue it, screw it etc.? The hull isn't thick, you see, so I'm a bit aprehensive about drilling holes in it. BTW, the hull is plywood (about 3mm thick).

I prefere aluminum over the steel. Steel will rust eventually unless its Stainles.

Take some 2mm thick 90* angle and epoxy it with a layer of glass cloth or you can even glass it in the bottom on both sides to make a rail. That way you can work the metal to the desired position but it still remain strong. Predrill everything and use some insulated mounts. Some folks don't even use them, but it'll cause bad vibrations for the radio equip. You could even try some thick radiator hose cut in sections to build your own insulated mount.

Thanks. Right, I'll try to make a vibration-free mount. As for glass-fibre, I havn't got any. I'll have a fish around for some, though.

I've used the thin stuff you can buy at an auto parts store for body work on cars. Two part epoxy is strong enough for the mount, but to mix in some cloth is just an extra measure.

Yep - 0.12 engine with manifold, tuned pipe, HPI fuel tank and various other bits and bobs arriving tomorrow. Shall be firing it up tomorrow just to try it out - hopefully the mount I made for bench-running my Enya 09 will fit it (that's going in another project, an air-prop boat - that engine is just too damn hard to start with a leather cord!).
