RC Surfer
I think you might be right mate. From memory i had to advance the timing on my esc to 22 when i was running the leapord motor i might try put it back to stock and give it a whirl first.
If it were a bigger prob, The Whole system would be Non Functional ...
Don't know why, But The esc loses programming
once in a while, Even When Nothing Changed.
It Happens to me, And Some of the boards I Have out there.
Any Other Pilots Have this lost programming Issue ?
Hi RC Surfers,<o></o>
I have been following this board for some time now and would like to share my experience. I got many helpful hints I would like to thank all of you for (Hi Rainer!).
Whereever I was travelling I always loved to be on the beach watching waves and surfers. I did some body and boogie board surfing, but never the „real“ thing.
About 3 years ago I saw a YouTube video of a RC Surfer. As it was winter and cold I forgot about beach activities (I live in Hamburg, Germany). However, in spring of 2009 I searched the web again and finally bought my first NIB Kyosho Lisa RTR at Ebay. I had some fun with her, but the desire to make mods came soon.
As I had never been into RC modeling, I had no clues. Shops around here did not offer much advice. To get an idea, I finally bought an XT Pro and parts from surfcurls to see the setup. At first use, I was amazed by the speed. Water intrusion was a problem from the beginning, killing ESCs and other electronics.
One day I decided to put the XT motor and ESC into one of my Lisas (had 3 by that time, plus 2 Venoms, which seem to be like the NQDs). I added a water pickup on the bottom and put he water exits at the rail of the board. When you let the board pass by you can see how the water exits to check the cooling and the hoses to the exit ports are much shorter.
I somehow did not like the combined cooling system where the warm water from the motor enters the ESC cooling.
A real boat builder showed me how to work with epoxy. Then I bought my first Dude NIB. I used some of the parts, but did not assemble anything. Later I bought another used, assembled Dude, just the empty board and the Dude. I bought more motors and ESCs and finally made my first modified dude.
My current setup (see pics)
- Kyosho dude board and dude<o></o>
- deck carbon reinforced<o></o>
- added lead under the keel and on front of board, after switching to lipos put additional lead in he back to compensate for the lighter weight of lipos
- Turnigy 2s 4000 Ma, silicone sealed
- B 3650 motor 2700 and 3000 KV
- Seaking ESC 60 Amps, silicone sealed (yes, seems to reset sometimes)
- 2 cooling systems
- original drive shaft/tube and motor coupling, never major problems
- y531 and x431 plastic props
- Used 2 white single fin rudders (they came with a Lisa I bought from the UK with other tuning parts, dont know where they are from)) until I broke both in Morocco on a rocky beach, then put in an aluminum rudder (see pic), works really well.
- still using the transmitter, receiver and servo that came with the 3 Lisa RTR kits, no problems, good range
Water intrusion: usually after 2 packs or so water enters through the drive shaft tube when the grease disappears. Deck seal is quite good. In bigger waves I use crystal tape around the deck, it takes only a minute to apply and 100 % waterproofs the deck. The footpeg screws I just covered with epoxy.<o></o>
O-rings for the Dude: Does anyone know the exact technical description?! The ones I bought are not as flexible as the stock ones.
It’s a great hobby. And it’s always so nice when you take the surfer out of the water for a battery change, turn around to walk back to your basis and you see all the people that had been watching having a big grin over their faces...
Last July, I did some RC Surfing at the Baltic Sea. Two boys were watching me and one of them asked: Do you surf yourself? I had to say no but that moment I decided to learn it before I was really to old (I am 56 now)... So I flew to Morocco in November 2010 and stayed in a surf camp in Tamraghthttp://www.morocsurf.com/index.html20 km north of Agadir. Denny, the founder of the camp, is a very nice host.
It was fun living in the camp with surfers from all over the world and I had my first little rides in whitewater with this huge 9’2 board. Found it even more difficult to learn than I had expected it anyway, but it was fun.
I have to admit that at least half of my surfing time was devoted to the Dude which of course had been in my suitcase. I was surprised that most surfers in the camp had never seen a RC Surfer before and you can imagine how amazed they were.
The waves In November 2010 were the best I had ever ridden - the Dude was in the lineup with the „pro’s“ riding the waves with them.
Probably most RC Surfers were real surfers at first. For me RC Surfing came first.
In February I spent another two weeks in Morocco. A surfer from Agadir – Iliass – filmed me with the Dude and put a video out on YouTube:
Have a look at Iliass’ other vids as well – I think he is quite a good surfer and you get an impression of Moroccan waves.
I am waiting for another video from Morocco that was filmed in much better waves.<o></o>
My next project will be assembling a unused dude kit with a flex drive and metal prop. However, I have no idea which parts to order at OSE when I will be using the stock drive shaft tube...
Well, that about covers it...
Happy Surfing
Frank
your board looks great lots of weight on the bottom , i like the cooling jackit on the motor , here is a picture of my new board , i am waiting on a servo and batteries from china , dam slow shipping its been two weeks
john maui
Well, I went to 00Dan's place yesterday to see how his ICEBREAKER is coming along.LOL
What can I say?
You aint seen nothin' like what he has been building.
Probably never will again either.
He has a long motor like the Maui boards, a massive Lipo like a brick.
A huge ESC and a Dude on deck
Wait 'till ya see the plumbing.
I better not say too much but he has been taking pics at each stage so you will see for yourselves soon.
I really don't know what is gonna happen when it hits the water.
Best described as radical, unorthodox, unique, different, crazy, bizzare and perhaps (but hopefully not) doomed???
Surftronic,
Great story bro.
Sounds like you managed to find a heap of quality hulls.
Yeah "Surfcurls" running gear is great but the NQD is a very leaky hull alright.
If you wanna use a flexi type shaft in a standard Kyosho tube you need the one Seb and Cananzi use.
I have one in a Kyosho Lisa and it works great.
To fit it without drilling a big hole in your hull at the motor end ou will also need a different coupler than they use.
I use a little 3.2mm one with 4 grub screws that I found on ebay, fits a 1/8 motor shaft and flexiend.
If you want a real Octura or similar flexcable drive you will need to fit a new tube that you will have to build like the one I posted a while back.
Maui,
New board looks great.
I see that you only used 4 deck bolts this time.
Love the pinstriping, looks cool.
As for me, I have not been out for a run since 8 days ago, just been busy workin' and cleanin' up around the yard all weekend.
Think I will give 00Dan a call and see how close to testing he is getting.
I just gotta see the maiden voyage if I can. LOL
Hope he gets it all on video.
It could be the first and last time it ever hits the water.
Might be smokin', LOL.
I do hope it runs well for him but I just don't know, anything could happen.
Sea ya,

Lange nichts von dir gehoert.
Great story - awesome video - Morocco must bethe perfect place to surf.
I see you're using the same 2S 4000mAh-Lipo as Jimi and I do.
(HobbyKing DE Warehouseis just around the corner for you, isn't it? ;-))
What run times do you get with this setup?
Take care!
Rainer
Looks like there could be a few good waves around over the next few days.
Just started chargin' up just in case.
On the way to work I noticed "Stockfence" had a few nice ones today.
Might be a bit windy tomorrow but Thurs and Fri are lookin' good.
Got a call from 00Dan at about 7:50am, he said he was testing in half an hour.
I drove out to "Point Moore" where he is staying but he was no where near ready for a run.
He had to fly out to Karratha this morning and has been working flat out all week to try and get a run before he went back to work.
That Dude I sold him looks like it has one of those Russian virus that the KGB invented.
This is one very sick lookin' setup.
I honestly think he is gonna have quite a few problems with this machine when it actually hits the surf.
But time will tell.
Also, Dan reckons he got superglue in his eye last night, not a good thing to do.
Dan,
Post some pics of your board and Dude.
Sea ya.

I just got some 3.2mm 7x7 SS wire cable to try in my drives.
It is a hell of a lot harder to cut than the standard Octura stuff.
The Octura cable cuts easily with pliers but I had to hit the pliers with a hammer quite a number of times to cut this stuff.
So I think it will be a lot stronger and hopefull won't break now.
I just glued one into a stub and will test over the next couple of days.
Fits perfectly intoo the stub and coupler.
Only $1.00 a metre too.
I found it on Ebay.
Hope it holds up to all the punishment.
Pretty confident 'cause this stuff is tough as nails but still reasonably flexi.
Fingers crossed.

After installing the new SS wire drive last night I bench tested the board and the old ESC has died.
Geez, the new wire looks like it could be perfect.
I have another new one but I have to silicon and tape it up.
I also found my motor mount has snapped an arm off.
Not surprising after last weeks pounding shorebreak session.
Also need to change an o-ring.
So I cleaned up the shed this morning 'cause it was lookin' trashed and there was bits of gear all over the place.
Hopefully I will get the little rocket up and running in a day or two.
Surfergirl,
Got ya gear yet or what???
Iceburg Dan,
Come on, post the pics bro.
These guys gotta see that crazy "Icebreaker" monstrosity that you have created.
Sea ya guys.
JIMI
(Gero - W. A.)
Bob sent me this great photo from the rivermouth at "Greenough".
When the river broke through recently it pushed a load of sand out along the rocks and perfect waves started breaking where they never usually do.
I just know you will like the pic.
Can't you justimagine your little electric shredder carvin' up waves like this???
Sea ya.
JIMI
(RC Surfer Heaven -Gero - West Oz)
enjoy the side show lol
that board looks futureistick, or like a spaceship or maybe something from starwars. how did you get the carbon fiber look, and the thusters look sick , you got to get some video , i will be standing by
john maui ps mod it like mad man rules
I Know You Put Lots Of Thought And Time In Your Man Mod...
I really Like The Tubing that You Made To Keep / fill the Prop shaft with grease (Great Idea).
Im Sure you plan to Cut an angle for the Copper Pipe water pick ups at the tail, to provide best water flow in.
The Cooling Flow is Hard To Sea From The Pics. Are The Outlets at the beam ? It appears you have planned 2 inflow (Tail)
and 2 outflow at the Starboard and port sides ?
I think This board is gonna rip !
Cheers,
Curly
Now go test this rocket.
Hope it runs really well for ya bro.
And get that Dude on there ASAP.
Don't forget to give us a report after the first run.
Keep dry.
JIMI
that thing looks insane!! hopefully you dont get to much water travelling up the rudder cable without no rudder compartment.cant wait to hear how it goes man!!
Nice work!!
are you running 2 x 3s? or 2x 2s?
