RE: Paint jobs help and advice
Hi guys,
excuse me for jumping in, but I have been using those Preval sprayers for my projects with some decent results....I shot down myDumas Hot shot 45with K&B epoxy paint and it turned out well....
Has anyone have any experience with these sprayers before?
Thx

Use to sell them...work well. Great way to get the basecoat color you want and need, applied to surface like a touch up gun would do.

RE: Paint jobs
Do I just use reducer or what to clean up my sprayer after usiing nason 2k clear?
The directions just say to clean your equipment according to local air blah blah blah but no mention of what to use!
The paint guy wasn't in at napa today, the young guy looked everywhere for cleanup data but thats all he found!
Is there anything else i could use? Acetone? laquer thinner?
Says you don't need to thin it to spray, mix 4:1 with the activator and spray.
Would it have to be nason reducer if I'm just using it to clean the gun, or could I use the cheap no name reducer from Parts Source, think its duplicolor.
Thanks

RE: Paint jobs
Nice job! I'll post pics of my rigger when it's painted. Pearl green and purple, Looks great on my zx6rr, kawi came up with great factory colors!
I know I can do a "sunburst" in stain on a guitar, going to try to do this paint job with no masking, want to feather the purple onto the green!
I haven't died from spraying nitrocellulose lacquer, this nason 2k sounds about as nasty! Wish I had a pressurized air mask for spraying! I'll hose down the outside shop and spray with the man door open with my respirator, New carbon cans on it should live through it!
Back to square one with this boat! The creatix auto airbrush paint I used didn't bond to itself at all, followed the directions exactly, the white base coat stuck beautifully, stuck to the product line through out but the colors pealed off, did the heat cross linking thing and everything! Stuff sounded great, you are supposed to be able to spray urethane clear over it after heating it! Left Citri-strip on it for 20 minutes and it pealed right down to epoxy.
This time using all automotive paint, starting with etching primer, can get the Kawi colors mixed in pearl cost 10 time as much but it will work I know that! Oh well for the next couple of years all new boats will be some version on the green and purple!
I don't know what I did with that creatix stuff but I put a lot of effort into that paint job! I just went to give it a scuff with a fine scotch brite pad and it rolled right up! Glad I didn't get a coat of clear on it!

RE: Paint jobs
Oh good greef its not that bad! I'd been paint over 28+ years now. If you really want to use nasty paint then use IMORN's! If you paint that without a resperator your dead!!!! Super toxic paint! They use that on semi's and some of the unlimited hydroplane's. You just need a charcoal resporator and you'll be fine when you shoot your paint. I use lacqure thinner to clean all my guns with. You also need to thin that NASON clear to. It helps make the clear flow better=make it smooth as glass or very little orange peal on your finish.

RE: Paint jobs
I also use lacqure to clean all my equiptment. Including my hands (very very bad habbit) if i forget to slap on the gloves. I used Sikkens paint in the shop wich is very expensive, spies hecker wich is a german paint for BMW, nason, dupont, lesanol, i can go on and on. I have found that as long as the clearcoat you use, is fuel resistant you will be fine. I just sprayed my first rc boat (sprayed cars for a living) and I went for the budget build. I used dupont basecoat, waterborn paint for airbrush, and nason clearcoat. for applications this small you can make almost any product look great. I think i spent 16 dollars on a pint of recuced base coat. had some left over clear so im not sure how much that cost. I think it was around 65 bucks a gallon. The biggest mistake people do is go cheap on their PRIMER! do not go cheap on a rattle can primer inless you want lifting or flaking issues down the road. the primer is your foundation for your paint. You wouldnt want a brick house built on sand would you?
As far as equiptment. Yes you can buy harbor freight spray guns they work just fine, BUT be ready to replace or rebuild them after one a few paint jobs. The seals and internal parts do not hold up to the chemicals as well as high priced guns. I personally own IWATA and SATA spray guns. Each gun is priced over 500 dollars but they are not necessary for a good paint job. They are only necessary if you do it day in day out for durabiltiy or you are spraying over a large flat panel with metalics. The cheaper guns do not lay metalics down as well as the more expensive guns. My IWATA gun is a 1.3 tip because it is a very low pressure high output gun. My SATA 3000 is a 1.4 because it operates at a little higher pressure. But it can all be chalked up to personal prefrence and spray technique.
Almost forgot. You better have a compresser to keep up with a spray gun or you will have major pressure drop and end up putting a fat layer down and probably end up running it. I personally reccoment 2 to 3 air water seperators used in conjunction with the dryers that have the incondecent material in them. Sort of like the little white bags in your beef jerky. Basically just soaks up moisture. (Sorry for the horrible spelling. I grew up in the tech age with spell check. Thank god for the Iphone)
Or you could just send it to me and I'll hook you up. Located in the St. Louis Missouri area. I have included 1 picture of the boat I just finished. The picture is not the greatest but you get the general idea of how slick it is.

RE: Paint jobs
Who is debating what paint is the MOST expensive? I simply said Sikkens is costly and not practical for a boat that's going to get bashed on the pond.

If this has been answered on here I guess I missed it.
But I hear you guys talk about spraying gel coat out of a siphon feed touch up gun, what gel are you using to do this and or any mixture?
