I've heard less than pleasant things about Spektrum systems in boats. I (as well as other boaters) use Futaba 2.4ghz radio systems with great results.

Spektrum radios are flawless on surface craft. You cannot use Spektrum, Futaba, Airtronics, or any 2.4Ghz system in submarines that go below the surface of the water.

Because the higher wavelength of the 2.5ghz radios don't penetrate the water, as
mentioned by Kmot,... The rooster tails, sheets of water, thrown up by fast boats has
sometimes created problems for lower end 2.5ghz radios.

At least that's the rumor...[&:]

Please lets not start any rumors.

there are a few people using the DX2 and DX3 2.4 without problems.
there are also some using the DX7 with great results.

There are a whole wack of people using the Futaba FASST 2.4 (I am one of them) system and they are flawless in boats.

do a search in regards to the 2.4 system for Futaba and Spectrum and you will find more than enough threads that will give you a hand.

The Sanwa (Airtronics) DSSS system works for me with my M11 radio. Also their FHSS system works well too.

UMI is correct about racing boats having problems. If you plane on doing some real race boat racing with everybody throwing a rooster tail spray up in a turn, you should consider checking out the problems with various racing organizations & clubs.

If you are the in a turn and 2 boats are throwing tails up between you and your boats antenna ??

Check with the people who race in crowded classes. Old style FM has never lost it in a crowded turn with rooster tails everywhere.

Nothing wrong with the FM, (race or play, I know)
Nothing wrong with the 2.4 FASST, (race or play, I know)
Some or most M11 works great,
a few Spectrum works fine.

I can only speak for myself but my 27mhz FM has worked flawlessly and trust it as much as radios can be trusted.

AM radios have a lot of problems, and are pretty much obsolete now so those are a bad investment.

Just be sure to use a fail-safe on your throttle whatever you choose. Thats the best insurance and they are not very expensive or bulky. More can go wrong than just loss of signal so it covers that aspect also. If anything radio related happens the fail-safe chops the throttle for you.

The worst that can happen is you're stuck having to retrieve your boat sooner than you wish, but your happy it is not in two or more pieces when it does happen.

I run a DSM2 Spektrum radio system in all of my boats and have none of the problems associated with the older DSM receivers...
