Default Need help with a speed control

I need a speed contol (with reverse) for a twin engine (27 turn) boat. I will be using a 9.6v 8 cell battery.

Most of the speed controls say they are for 6-7 cell batteries. Will that work or will it fry the speed control?

Any suggestions???

Thanks

Default Speed controls

Using a speed control with more cells than sugested is not a good idea.
Most of the speed controls made today will tolerate a slightly higher voltage input of a cell or 2, but you take your chances. Some of the components of the speed control can be quite voltage sensative depending on the brand you choose, and an extra cell could just send them over the edge.

Current is going to be you determining factor.
Since you give no description of the application other than the turns of the motors, I will assume a high current application to be on the safe side.

The need for reverse is going to be a limiting factor. None of the good high end speed controls for boats have reverse. There is no need for it in a high current racing application.

If you are building a slower scale or fun boat, there are some low end speed controls out there that have reverse and will handle higher cell counts.

Give us more information, and I will see if we can come up with a list for you.

Peter

Use a micro switch connected to a relay!

Or look into the Novak speed controle for the E - Max. It's made to run on 14.4 volts and run two motors! I see them selling NIB on E-Bay for around $75.00.

The application would be a scale boat. PT boat to be exact. Two 540 motors, if that helps.

Thanks for any info you can provide...

Once again look into the Novak Speed controlers for the E Max truck. I think it will fit your project.

If you're looking for Low Buck, maybe the Dumas rheostat speed control is worth a look at. It is run from a servo. I was going to suggest the ESC's made for the E-Maxxes but got beat on that one. M.A.C.K. Products might have what you need or Vantec. Model Control Devices in Canada makes some very nice ones.

Default MCD

Ron is dead on about the MCD controllers. For a scale project, or a boat not requiring high amp loads, there is nothing better.
Their controllers have won events world wide.

Talk to Dan at MCD and he will set you up with what you need.

Their phone # is 705 738-1335

Use a Novak 610HRV. It is designed to take 6-10 cells and it is reversering. -Steve
