Volcano EPX Question
#2
the stock ESC is a piece of junk. it will work just fine for a long time, provided you use the stock battery and dont try to put more power to it. you can get away with using a 6cell 7.2v battery with more MAH for longer runtimes, but you cant use a battery with more voltage.
i just bought a used volcano epx PRO. that is the brushless version. i have read that the drivetrain is very tough, but that some of the a-arms, shocks and such parts are not strong enough. i will test mine and see. im pretty good and modding such parts to make them stronger anyway.
the epx pro costs $190 new. the main difference is you get a novatech brushless system instead of the brushed. its WAY faster.

I have the Vortex EPX. I bought it VERY used but it was in ok shape and ran perfect. I ran the truck stock several times before tearing it apart for a rebuild. The stock ESC will handle 6 cells or a 2S liPo but keep in mind that there is no Cutoff for the LiPo so you will need to run a cheap $3 alarm. I eventually upgraded to an XL5 ESC and 15T motor then up to a VXL system. The original ESC and motor still worked fine so I stuck them in an old Bolink Hotrod I had sitting around and they still run today.
I've heard a ton of negative stuff about Redcat and all the other import brands and my reasoning for buying the Vortex was to see for myself if they where any good. I'm happy say that the truck has run great since day one so it would appear that everyone spreading negative rumors have little to no experience with the brand

oh, dont mean to correct you, but i think you meant to say that the stock esc can handle 2s liponot 3s. a 3s lipo would fry it for sure.
i have a redcat lightning exp pro(brushless) and it is super tough! i jumped it at the skate park and off ramps and have yet to break anything! and for awhile i had a redcat backdraft 3.5 nitro. the recoil broke, and the stock servo failled. other than those issues, the buggy was really nice. i only sold it cause nitro just aint for me. dont care for all the hassle.
right now im saving to buy a redcat rs10 crawler. i think that redcat is trying hard to improve their rc's, and its starting to show!

You are correct. I meant 2S. I've corrected my post. Thanks Nitro.
