quick question, i have a old discontinued thunder quake that has a torq .21 engine and it is starting to go because it overheats and and does not idle, no matter what tune i have it and i have resealed it i dont know how many times. Any way, whats a good .21 engine? also it needs to have a slide carb, not a roto. I just dont know what engine are good and what are horible. -thank you

I know alot of people don't like rtr engines, but I love the Losi 350 that came in my 8ight 2.0. It definitely holds its own against everything that I have ran it against. It always starts up quickly and it holds its tune really well.
-Also, my friend has a Dynamite engine in his Jammin truggy. That truck is unbelievably fast. I don't remember what model the engine is, but it has a blue head, and it is the one that has the rpm range of up to 38,000. I think the name has the word "turbo" in it.

The Mach 427 is a .26ci and the Losi 454 is a .28ci. LRP has good engines, but are made by the same factory as the Mach/Losi/dynamite engines. The exterior of the engines are different, but the lrp's cost more.

My brother in law had a thunder quake with the same engine. IMO, a .21 engine isn't big enough for a 1/8 scale monster truck. The Losi 350 engine is a .20ci small lock engine which I do not think will have enough oomph for the T-Quake. I think a dynamite Mach 427 or Losi 454 would be a good powerplant for that truck. They are modestly priced RTR engines that run well and tune nicely. If you're a good tuner and want to spend more money, a Picco .28 would be a good higher end engine.

The thunder quake is 1/8 scale, and has huge stock tires. It's heavy, probably 12-14 pounds. For these reasons I say a .26-.28 engine will make th op much happier. A .21 in a monster truck will probably be a little anemic, especially with a single speed transmission.

I just put an LRPZ28 Spec 3 in an old RAZE ST that i bought used as a re-intro into the hobby.
After all my research, and now being on my 4th break in tank, i believe this is going to be a fantastic engine! I do not think that you will find better for the money, but with your budget, i had seen many posts and comparisons for a Picco which is more expensive.
The LRP Z28 spec 3 has been out for a while now, and i could find virtually no real addressable complaints, and tons of happy customers. I tell you that after hearing it run through a couple of tanks and start to come around to a normal tunable condition, i almost felt bad that it was in a used old truggy! I was incredibly impressed with its early performance, i can't express how satisfied i am so far with my purchase, and i hope my satifaction will continue for a very long time with this engine.
IMHO, i believe that you just can't find a better motor withing the price range of an LRP Z28 Spec3....a home run for sure.<br type="_moz" />

Without having a reply with several quotes in it, the LRP spec 3 is the same engine as the Losi 454 with a different head and crankcase markings. SH makes the LRP, dynamite/Mach, XTM, and many others. The Losi 454 is probably the cheapest of the lot. A Picco would be a great engine for the money but you have to be a good tuner with those.
