My rc car goes forwards when I press forwards, but it has the speed of reverse, and in reverse it gives the forward throttle. In addition, the brake works going from reverse to forward, not forward to reverse. to me this is very strange, and as far as I know it isn't a problem with the remote tuning.

Sounds like you need to switch any 2 wires between the ESC and motor to reverse the polarity.
