you know.... I've seen stuff like this at walmart... the one I saw was going for $129.00 and had something on the box that said it goes a whopping 27mph!!!!

Sorry, but that made me shudder. My first RC was a tyco truck(or something like that) that I was limited to run indoors due to small wheels and lack of power).... and not very well on the carpet- so I was usually restricted to the kitchen.... unfortunately... all it took was a collision with a lego car my brother made and the truck never ran again... (we were playing "chicken")

Then I got an RC10 buggy- one of those original gold tubs, and although it is now over 20 years old it will do about 35 mph and takes on jumps, rocks, trees, etc... and stills comes back for more... (I've seen these on ebay selling for about $75 or so- and that inlcudes radio, and ESC!.... although they won't be really fancy ones- it'll still get you going)

Anyway, my point is... you can get on ebay or another online auction, and get a REAL RC car for about the same price (although it would have to be an older model to be the same price), and it would out-perform, and out-last any of these "non-hobby-class" RC cars. Plus, I'm sure you would be much more satisfied... Even if you got a beater RC10 or something, you could little by little go about making improvements... anything you do to it (not counting electrics) won't cost too much.. ($20 or $30)... so by speading that out over time... it would be very affordable. (just be sure to do your homework so that what you get still has parts available... I beleive Team Associated regularly makes parts for all their older cars...

lets see... if I do my math right......270 ft per minute = 16200 ft/hr (270x60 min.)
there are 5280 ft in a mile so (16200/5280=3.0681) you are looking at just over 3 mph...[&:]

yeah.... I'd save a bit more and get a real RC car

i mean im only a teenager
First off, don't sell yourself short... Even being a teenager you still have opportunities to make some money here and there....since it's summer you could always mow lawns to get extra cash....get a part-time jobs...do stuff for folks who'll pay you...

Depends on what kind of truck you are looking for...
Gas vs electric>
Gas tends to be more spendy, time consuming, takes more "know -how" (engine tuning), but for many it is more gratifying.
Electric is usually cheaper, usually just as fast, less messy, and is considered by most to be the ideal way to get into RC.

Stadium Truck vs Monster Truck>
This depends mostly on the terrain you want to run it on. either way you have plenty of options....
MT's are generally more spendy... most are 4wd and they have plenty of clearance and agility over most any terrain... the most popular are the Tmaxx (also Emaxx if you want electric) and also the Savage... Any of these run right around $400 (give or take $40- depending on where you buy it)
Stadium Trucks are pretty cool... Most are 2WD, they have less clearance than MTs, but are still considered "all-terrain"... I believe HPI has a 4WD Stadium Truck (it's called the RS4 MT) If you get a nitro one, it costs almost as much as a MT, but Electrics are a bit cheaper.... (the prices of stadium trucks can really vary so I'm not going to give any specific prices... except that they can run anywhere from $200-$700)

ORIGINAL: ftx9
what if i dont trust ebay what do i do then
Good point...It's better not to trust ebay, by being wary you're more apt to get a good deal... lots of us have really gotten burned on ebay- usually because we trust them to be as honest as we are, or we simply didn't do our homework....... you can also look on the RCU marketplace for something... but even then you're still taking a chance on the seller's integrity...
My suggestion would be to do your homework... Check the feedback on the seller... don't bid if they have not had much selling experience (less than 100).... Also, be wary of sellers with negative feedback.... stay away from them... or at least check out why their feedback was negative... see how much that same item has been selling for recently so you know if you are getting a good deal or not (you can do an advanced search that shows only the completed items- then you'll be able to see what your truck has been selling for)... Only bid on stuff that has GOOD clear pictures that show detail.... generally this is where I've been burned.... I could'nt see the item clearly so I trusted the item description, but when it got to me it was all beat or broken. That really bites... Be sure you know EXACTLY what you are bidding on... if it says a Novak Rooster ESC.... don't go thinking it is the Super Rooster... When in doubt >Email the seller.
Sometimes you can win an auction with more than you want, sell off the other stuff and come out ahead...I once won an auction for a hopped up Tmaxx, a XXX-NT, a XXT, and a couple boxes of parts all for $400.... the pics sucked, so nobody else bid on them...I emailed the seller probably 10 times- he was probably sick of me by the end of the auction.... But I got the cars, sold a bunch of parts and the XXX-NT, and my overall out-of-pocket expenses for my maxx and XXT are about $100... I'm about to list the XXT on an auction and when all's said anddone I will have made money by buying that Tmaxx. The catch is, you have to have the cash upfront to do that...[&:]

Anyway... best of luck to you...

Im not sure on prices over in Canada, I know that prices in the UK are much higher than in America but im not sure about Canada but 100 seems a very low budget, if you search around on ebay or RCU Marketplace you may be very lucky and find something. With that budget i dont think your going to have much luck elsewhere.

Search on ebay for a Traxxas Electric Rustler or Traxxas electric bandit. They are cheap, entry leval buggies that wont get you laughed at when you take it to the local track (they are slower, but they are still "hobby class"). Plus those two vehicles are tough as nails and with your low budget you shouldnt have a problem keeping up with the maintenance.

Here's the most basic Rustler brand new: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...=LXJE53**&P=ML

Here's the most basic Bandit brand new: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...=LXJE54**&P=ML

Used you could easily get more than what those come with (a battery or two, spare tires, etc etc) for 100 bucks or less....but its still ebay. But follow the advice listen above and you shouldnt have too many problems. Although honestly I dont trust people in general so I dont use ebay.

Also, ask your parents if they will help you make the deal so you can use PayPal so if they cheat you you can get your money back. Just give you're money to them when you're ready to buy whatever it is, and then they can use paypal to purchase your truck!

Ok now about RCs!

-Onroad cars are very resistricted and unless you have an RC onroad track or club nearby, the parking lot can get boring after a while.

-Electrics are cheaper from the start, but they take alot of money to get competitive. They are more idiot proof and are less hassle, but if you want to race you will have to toss out some cash. An RTR nitro vehicle usually will have a fast enough engine to keep you up with everyone else in the pack.

-Stadium trucks are probably the cheapest, but most versatile vehicles. They can go onroad and offroad VERY easily and without many mods. They are what most beginners like to start with because of their toughness and ease to drive.

-Monster trucks are a huge money pit compared to most other vehicles (although the Savage isnt as bad as the Maxxes). They are cool looking but they cost the most the maintain.

-1/8 Buggies are probably the most expensive of all types of RC, and are probably the most geared for racing.

I say get an electric Stadium Truck. For a beginner, that will be the most lasting fun, least hassle, and less costly of any other class you could get into.

Go to www.ebay.com and enter this code. It is everything you wanted! You might be able to get it now if 1) you bid quick enough, and 2) you can get you're parents to pay for half of it now, and then you could pay em back after you get payed! Also, you could start getting money for hopups and such!

dont count out the stampede.they are similar to the rusty but can take a better beating and higher jumps cause of extra suspension travel.you can get em about the same price.

The Pede is a little more expensive, and is more top heavy. Plus it uses the same arms and shocks...

And the site is www.e bay.com (RCU wont allow links to ebay...)so just go to e bay... and enter one of these codes.

And I was tired so I forgot to put the codes in lol:
5903893832
5903599506
5904144781

Those are just a few. You can look around more. Also check your local hobby shop and see if they can get you a deal on a Rustler or Bandit.

Here's a great deal on a Bandit:

Good for you! Glad we could help get you off on the right foot in RC!

Btw, if you are ever looking to get some mods for your traxxas truck, www.rdracingproducts.com is the leader in Traxxas truck mods (The Rustler and the Stampede). On the traxxas forums thats what 90% of the truck owners use, including me when I had the Nitro Rustler.

I have had a blast with my new stampede, but...

Is it just me or are installing the friction pegs into a spur gear the most maddening thing you've ever had to do? Is there an easy way to do this? Also, I have never had any trouble stripping spur gears in my Evader, but my stampede has stripped a spur gear about every other time I use it.

My first (apart from a few little plastic £15 things from Argos) was my Tamiya XBG . . . oops, it's still my only car! (but I've got 3 boats and 2 potential planes).
My XBG cost my £185 for everything and it's a cracking 1/10 nitro car. It'll manage about 30mph in standard form, but I'm upgrading the engine soon to a Force 15 (0.7 bhp mmmmm!), it should hit about 45 - 50mph then.
If you hunt around, you can find decent cars for little money and as others have said, get yourself a job. I'm only 18 and I've only just left high-school (stayed on at sixth form), but I still have been earning £220 a month through a two-evening a week job at the local supermarket. That's more than enough to support the hobby . . . . assuming you're not like me and don't have about 20 other hobbies!

Sorry enya engine...but more power wont make you go fast []. It will just help you take off faster. Change the gearing (idk if you planned on doing that already) and you can make it faster, but it would have the same sluggish acceleration as before.

Heh that sounds like a pretty pointless purchase to me . Where would he find parts...or a place to run it heh.

The Pede is prolly best for him (they are more expensive though) because it has the most ground clearance and is the most beginner proof.
